I wanna get a plow for my Super M...she's got fluid in tires and weights...will she pull a 4-14 plow or should I just get the 3-14?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!!

IH rated this tractor as a 3-4 plow. I usually pulled 3-16'a with mine if it was sod and/or clay soils and a lot of trash to cover. If I was plowing sandy loam soils ams just grain stubble or corn stubble I pulled 4-14's. I usually plowed 8 inches deep. My Super was quite strong, it had 4 1/8 bore cylinders with fire crater pistons and I ran 14.9-38 rear tires on it with 3 sets of wheels weights...no liquid ballast.

I've got your plow for you. An IH 3-16. Like new . Still has the original blue super chief paint and decals onthe boards. Don't think it was ever used. I gave it a 150 foot test. Where is the model number on those things? It's a three point model.

Keep away from the 4 bottom plow. You will be unhappy with the plow and tractor. Look around and see what other farmers are using. I have medium heavy ground here and pull a No.60 plow, 3 bottom in 2nd gear and that is plenty for it. Try for a 2 bottom 16" plow and you wll be more than happy. Happy plowing,,,,, ,,,,, ,,,,, ,Boyd

here around plainfield-oswego IL. 3/16 second gear on both. 3/14 third gear on both. packed headlands may send you running for a two bottom though. it all comes down to soil type listen to people in your area.

Yep my will held only 2 bottoms. Three bottoms gives the M a work out.

I liked reading all the posts on plowing. Here in the Red River Valley, an M is about a 1 bottom plow tractor, maybe 2 on a good day. Currently, when we have to plow we have a 7140 FWA on 6-16. It is a lot for that tractor, usually 3 mph tops, some days 4. We had to add 1800 pounds of suitcase weights, and full fluid in the front to get the front to bite. Check your soils, and talk to the local guys, they will have a great idea as to what it will handle.

Central Iowa- 3 bottom for M for most work 2nd/3rd gear. Old pasture/hayground was get the H's 2 bottom plow hitched to M to turnover 6+ inch furrow, otherwise 1st gear, shallow depth to skim roots and weeds for few rounds. RN.

3X14", or 2X16" In this case more is less. Usibality when it is tilled is more important. Stress on components favors higher speed less lugging. JimN

Jeff, you asked a question, and got good advice in return. Listen to those guys, they've been there and done it.

Your tractor will be over loaded with a four bottom plow. I have three bottom no 8 little genius 14 inch. It will pull it in most ground, but in some places it is almost to much.

Don't go with a 4 bottom on the SM. Stick with the 3 x 14". You don't have enough power for the 4 bottom. You will just spin alot even with weight.

Well You are right on the line If your soil is toward the sandy side the 4 bottom would be my choice.....if you have a lot of clay the the 3 bottom would be my choice..... My M will pull 3 - 14's,drag trip plow in 2nd and third, 8" deep..... mix soils on same the farm in south west Ohio Don

Your Super M would just plaw with 3-14's in 3rd gear here.....maybe that would be best.....that way no contest and a lot a fun..... I just play.....Don

I gonna have to go 1st gear the first time around...this plot hasn't been turned in probably 30 years and there's alot of small rocks, so, I don't want to bust up the plow...maybe I'll get the 4 bottom since I gotta go slow anyway...no shortage of power, just worried about traction

You are making a mistake if you go with 4-14's. I pull 3-14 behind my 400 which has loaded tires and a set of weights. In sod 2nd gear is all I can pull. 3rd gear in corn stubble. If you do get the 4 bottom, you will end up only plowing 4-6' deep which is probably not what you want to do if the ground has not been plowed for 30 years.

A lot depends on soil. Here in Pa, if you were plowing land that hadn't been plowed in 30 years, I would think 2-16's would be good. Put 4-16's behind it and I don't think it could even move. Around here an M was a 2-3 plow tractor, and a lot of guys used 2-16's with them.

You may have a problem with traction with the 3 bottom. Hal

I used 3-14 on a SM for years, get the draft on the plow set right, a SM was a 3 bottom tractor .
