I just put on a alternator kit from Martins Equip. on a SM I am restoring it has a new delco alternator with built in regulator ,one wire hookup and the brackets it comes with are really high quality and it fits under the hood with no problem. It is on sale 10% off which just about pays shippingwith resister included it is $86.00 less 10% you won't find a quality setup for less. 1-877-807-0151

I've rewired every tractor we've ever had...at least a couple dozen. Go to Radio Shack and buy the wire and ends you need and do it your self. It only takes a few more minutes than installing a pre-made harness, and you will know every part of the system. You will also save around $100 from the prices that I have seen. Very easy job, and you get to spend a little extra time with your newest baby. Mike

I changed my 41 H over to 12v because the original generator was gone,as it was on the 1950 C I did before, and the 46 M I'm about to do.I don't have a problem with 6v,but without a generator there goes most of the 6v system, time you find a generator and a voltage reg,buy a battery, its more cost effective to switch it over.Had I had the gen,I might have left it.

12V makes them start better and faster, gives you stronger lighting.

Putting a Japanese alt on an American tractor is just plain wrong, and this is coming from a Canadian.I used a small Delco off an S-10,FITS PERFECTLY and neatly.Truth be known,it too was probably made in Japan, but Delco-Remy sounds much better to say than Nippondenso. On my C I used a small 12v battery that is used in those small foreign cars, fit into the stock box perfectly.

Each person has an opinion on the value one way or another of the tractorconverted to 12v.The average run of the mill H or M it really doesn't matter much, but if the tractor were a rare low build, and therefore a collectors item, then yes, keeping it 6v is the way to go.

My 2 cents worth, for what its worth.

Tom ,I never heard of a 9v battery. Are you putting a 6v in upside down? I think you mean 8volt. Right?

Why is it when someone post a question about changing to 12v there are always some telling them they should not. I changed all my 6v to 12v and I would never have a 6v again. I say they are a lot eaiser to maintain and nobody is going to change my mind. But each his own. As far as value, H is not that high priced, because there are so many out there, so I don't think it will make that much differance. If you do a good neat job with alt. under the hood, 99 percent will never know.

I guess it is for the same reason that the car makers make different color cars!

Lots of folks do a lots of things under the hood of the H including the conversion to the 12 volt system. Again "I think" you are going to depreciate the value of your tractor by making this conversion because it is just not the way it came from the factory. I personally think it is worth more with the factory system working. It is no big deal to fabricate the battery cables. Keep in mind that you need large cables...I believe it is #8 braded wire--might be #6, I cannot remember.... As indicated, the repair of the generator is about $100.00 and maybe $40.00 for voltage regulator--yours might not be bad. I suggest that you shop around and find a 9 V battery to replace the 6V. Yes, I did mean 9 V They are unusual but available. This will not require any modification of the coil or anything else.

How is that possible? The 9 volt battery would need at least 9.8 volts coming from the charging circuit to properly charge the battery? Did you augment the generator or regulator to accomodate this or is it all stock except the battery?

How are you planning to charge a 9 volt battery with a 6 or 12v system?

I recommend a Hitachi alternator, or Late (resent) ford alternator, they are powerful, but small. Many connection schemes are in these archives. Put in Hitachi wiring, and they will pop out. Here is the link to Bob M's great wiring diagrams. Good luck, JimN

I don't know that anybody makes a kit. I think you might just have to find what you need, do a little fabrication to make the alternator mounting hardware, and assemble it. Don't cut your hood - it will fit under it without cutting. Wiring diagrams are available; some of the guys can refer you to where they are. mike
