I know the weather has a lot to do with it, but is there any other recomendations for a better start this time of year? When I try to start it, it cranks REALLY slow & sometimes will even stop turning while pushing the starter button. Any suggestions, or is there nothing I can do & just put up with it.

"Modern" folks aren't used to 6 volt systems, and neither are many car parts stores. Easily accessed battery cables are gauged for 12 volt systems.

Good advice here. "00" sized cables, a good ground (with some copper anti-sieze at the joint)and proven battery should start any tractor in the winter. My lessons learned from this site.

Granger: Listen to the 00 gauge cable advice from from john, Rusty and Gordo. I once started a 6 volt Farmall 300 at -40 and it went urr----- ---urr----- ---urr and she fired up on the 3rd one. there is magic in those old Farmalls, and if you get good enough, just let off the starter when you know it's going to fire. More voltage to the ign doing that.

Garnger, I agree with Gordo and Ol Rusty, the use of 00 Gauge (especially if 6 volt) cables and to sort of milk the pistons over a lil at a time versus simply holding the button down may do the trick. Couple that with a heavy duty high CCA or Amp/Hr battery is even better. Another thing you may wanna do right off the bat is to remove, clean n wire brush shiney, and reattach each n every battery n starter n switch n ground connection n see what happens. After all that if shes still a slow cranker its time to check out the starter and switch.

My 340 won't take a frost plug so I bought a magnetic oil pan heater. Warm up the oil and she cranks like it's June.

The H Farmall that my father used to have was the same way. It had the correct large cables, the charging system was working, and the battery was good. It never failed to start, even in below zero temps. Push down the start button and the engine would only rotate about 1/4 of a turn and stop. Let up on the button, push it down again, and get another 1/4 turn. Release the button, push it the third time, and the engine was running. Just like that, every time. That tractor had a loader on it and was used for loading ensilage to feed the cattle. No matter what, that H had to run or the cattle didn't get fed.

Have the local electric shop make you new battery cables from 00 ga cable.
