our 400 gas is a tough starter. it only starts on 2 of the throttle notches no matter the weather. they are notch 3 and 4. (4 is better cuz it is a medium idle) the other day when it was about 30F out, it started but someone had it one notch too low and i didnt notice til it already fired, and anytime you touch the throttle the first 5 minutes it's running, it will kill. well it killed after 30 seconds, and wouldnt even start pulling it with another tractor until i bumped the throttle to halfway, but then it would only run at 1/4 throttle after it fired. what the heck is going on? something in the carb or a governor issue. it's still 6v, but if you dont have the throttle on "the spot" (insert all the jokes you want here) jumping it with 12 or pulling it make no difference. once at operating temp it runs strong.

I had a JD 3010 that did this same thing. If you didn't get it running on that first go it was back to the house and wait 1/2 a day. Problem was it was flooding. Discovered this by quickly pulling a couple of plugs when it died.
They were dripping fuel. I went through the carb twice. Not much better. Finally bit the bullet and sent the carb off to one of the better JD builders in the U.S. Absolutely new machine after that. I'd bet you are flooding too. Imagine you are never choking this beast.Pull a plug the next time it won't start and look for fuel.If they are wet, you have a carb problem, more serious than floatlevel. An open or clogged pasage somewhere. Or just send the carb off to Rusty Farmall for a rebuild and get rid of the problem quickly.

one time a few years back, something didnt shut off right (likely the needle valve/float)and the entire intake and combustion chambers were filled with gas. so mentioning the carb has merit. it only happened 2 times, and never again. there is a lot of varnish coating on the outside of the carb near alot of the gasket or screw seams. have to consider workin on that one day then! tractor was supposed to be thouroghly overhailed around 1990, dont think we've got 100 hours on it yet!

Karl: I've seen a few gas Farmalls like that over the years. The 140 I have right now is like that, about 3-4 throttle notches it will start on. I've noticed those tractors always start if you follow the rules. I never condidered it a bad trait as they should warm up around that speed for several min.anyhow.

the generator/vr won't cut in at that speed, i was worried about that; and i should have known better than to touch the throttle right away, but being it was running at a low idle and not medium where it should have been (one notch difference), i got a little hasty. too bad once it kills cold it will almost never start again!

karl: My 140 will usually start again cold but not easily, and yes I have walked away from it and just left it for awhile. My tractor acts as though the choke is not quite effective enough even if the rpm's are just a wee bit higher.

On the charging end, my tractor has an alternator and I use a push button to excit it. I have to be careful not to do that too quickly, or the load of alternator will kill the engine in the first 45 seconds. A person should be able to catch that on choke and keep it running, but no way with my 140. You just don't disturb anything for close to 45 seconds, just let it idle it's own slow way. Once I get through that first minute, I'm away, no more problem.
