Finally got around to working on my M.I've been playing with a cub I bought.Anyhow I changed out the govenor spring like you said and HOLLY cow sure made it sound different.I haven't jetted the carb yet don't know if i will.I don't know if i have more power or not but it sounds a hole lot better. The spring is about 1 round shorter than the stock its the closest i could find at TCS. NOW how to set gov. do you just do it by sound or what? What i got right now is the low rpm screw (top) all the way out(sounds like it is idling faster now) to make it idle. I have the high rpm screw (bottom)all the way in and the throttle won't pull all the way back only about 3/4.Even at 3/4 of wide open it sounds good i just don't want to over due the RPMs.Do you think my spring is to short? Thanks for the help!!

I guess I'll have to wait until i can go back to TSC or try to find them around town.TSC had a sold out rack I'm sure thats the one I needed it would have been 1 size larger. Thanks again.

Spring is too short if it wont idle down. If memory serves me right, I think it has 14 or 16 wraps on the spring. Either way, theres no way to adjust it to run lower if the spring is too short. The right spring is actually just a tad longer than the stock spring,,, Not much, maybe a wrap or 2. Find the longer spring, and check back before you go any further,,,, if your ear is good enough to find the peak rpm, then try that,,, but best way is a tach, or dyno, or one of those pto speed checkers,,, They use those to deterimne rpms in electric motors. It is hard to determine rpm without a tach or dyno. You mnay have to adjust throttle linkage, on top of engine so you have full throttle movement. I tried severl different stronger springs on my SMTA before I settled on one. I don't think the spring really makes it run faster, just makes it hold the RPMs better. Chad S has had some great posts here and on pulling form on this. You might also want to change out distributor advance springs for lighter ones to get full advance quicker. With mine I wanted not so much increased RPMs but the ability to hold the top RPM. Chad has had some really good posts also about drilling the main jets.
