Hi folks! Just picked up a Farmall H a couple weeks back so I'm new to this fourm. Been after an H for years...grew up driving one and now am proud to be an owner. I've got a problem however...the tractor ran fine when I brought it home, but things have changed. It fires up great with a quick choke but then wants to die right away. Almost like it isn't getting any gas. I just pulled the carb and went through things...it all looks good. Replaced the carb, fired her up...she ran for maybe 2 minutes then started to chug and surge then died. Back to fire up on choke then dieing right away. I did have the sediment bulb off last week and replaced that gasket. Any thoughts on why my new red gal can't seem to keep the gas flowing? Thanks!

Same issue w/mine. Besides all the usual cleaning of the fuel supply suggestions, I had a rather simple issue. My main adjusting screw on the carb (the one pointing to front of tractor) was not even close. 5 turns off the seat and she runs like a champ. Amazing difference. Just wasn"t getting the fuel.

While I question his call, my partner at the shop claims I have a gas problem too.

1. There is a screen at the end of the fuel line where it screws into the Carb. Disconnect the fuel line and then screw out the fitting with the screen on it...clean the screen. Screen may have deteriorated and allowed crud into carb passage.

2. With the fuel line disconnected, put a jar under it and open the cut off valve at the sedament bowl. See if you have a strong fuel flow. If not, then crud in the tank.

Soulution: get a new sedament bowl with the standpipe and screen on it from Tractor supply. It will filter the crud and be above the crud in the bottom of your tank.

If you have a strong flow, then reinstall the fuel line to the carb, open the valve and let fuel come to crab. Open the drain plug on botton of carb, if no flow or weak flow, then needle valve body at float has crud in it...Remove bottom half of carb, remove float and needle valve, remove fuel supply line and blow backwards through with air line.

There are different opinions on the subject, but if it were me, I would also install a clear plastic inline filter so I could see what was happening and clean my fuel at the same time.

Chad, Check your screen on the sediment bowl again and then pull the screen out of the carb where the fuel line goes in. May try blowing back wards thru the gas line. That might help find the problem. Have fun,,,,, ,,,,, ,,,,,Boyd

Loosen the retainer on the sediment bowl until fuel starts to drip then retighten. Loosen gas line at carburetor and see if there's a good stream of fuel. If there isn't you may have crud in the gas tank blocking fuel flow. Shine a flashlight in the tank and see if its clean.

If there's good flow from the gas line your inlet screen may be plugged with dirt or rust at the carburetor inlet. Hal

Well i had the same problem on my M...if ur carb is cleen and it dying after u get it goin....it might be that u have alot crud in your tank and it goin int all the screens and vales in the top of your sediment bowl therefore not letting any gas get through...but i have a question...when you say its dying after u start it....do u mean you dont give it any throtle and its just idieing then quits..or are u goin in to 1,2,3 ect and ten its dieing under a small load?

Baxter,

It starts under choke...in other words when I close off the air it must suck hard enough to get gas through...but when I open the choke it dies...at any throttle speed. I"ve tried running the rpms up but it still dies. It"s actually quite obvious she isn"t getting good fuel to the plugs under "unchoked" conditions. When I had the carb completely apart all passages looked good, including the screen at the end of the fuel line and when I open the valve at the sediment bulb I get good gas running to the carb.
