Farmall M Shifting Troubles

At first my M was stuck in 1st gear, so following advice from a thread here I moved the rails back to neutral. Now however I can not shift while the tractor is running. There is a kinda grinding heavy resistance and the lever is almost flung back when I try. I can shift just fine into all gears while the tractor is off and by doing so was able to move the tractor out of the field. Even by starting out that way I still can not shift while the tractor runs.

This is my first tractor (bought two days ago) so any advice on what I should check to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The first one inch of travel of the clutch pedal away from the platform (transmission top that the seat bolts to) is the freeplay. The pedal can be pushed down to that extent easily with just light pressure. at that point it should get much harder to push abd feel much springier. then the remaining travel to the far stop (fully depressed position should take that same amount of force, or a little more as it goes down.
If this is how it is adjusted and feels, I believe thar City Boy is correct ant the plate is rusted/stuck to the flywheel. Driving it around in second or third gear, and holding the clutch down all the time while applying the brakes enough to almost kill the engine (for about 5 seconds per application, then off for 15 seconds or so to cool the brakes) will also help. The idea is to load the clutch until it breaks free from being stuck.

If the adjustment is not like that, change the rod length at the external linkage to make it like that, and try it again. good luck, and keep us informed, JimN

Thank you all for the quick and informative responses.

I tried City-Boy"s suggestion with no luck so far unfortunately. It"s definitely more then the usual grinding, I experienced that when I first test drove it and was suprised it had been less grinding then the newer 8N"s I"d drove.

I"m relieved you each think the problem has to do with the clutch, I was worried it would be the transmission.

I"ve read around a bit more and saw references to adjusting the clutch and in the shop manual I got it showed the movement range/ pedal free travel of the clutch pedal. Is the free travel how much it should move overall or only how much it should move before it engages? If it"s overall then it"s normal, if that gives any clues. I"m loathe to try to replace the clutch yet, as I"ve not much mechanical skill and know-how.

I"m not sure how to know if it"s disengaging all the way, except to say the pedal comes back up. It is still shifting just fine when not running, very smooth and easy.

The local tractor shop only had the shop manual, which manual would be the best to order?

Thanks again.

If the tractor won't shift into gear from neutral while the engine is running, the clutch disc is probably stuck to the pressure plate or flywheel. Many times this can be broken loose by placing the tractor in 1st gear, pushing in and holding in the clutch, and then starting up the tractor - several times - with a good bit of throttle. Keep the clutch pedal depressed. Just be out in a big open area and allow yourself room to shut it off and stop rolling before you hit something. When it breaks loose, it will probably be fine from then on....

I mention this next consideration only because you said this is your very first tractor: If what you mean is you can not shift from one gear to another without violent grinding while the tractor is moving, that is normal as the gears in an M, like most tractors, are not synchronized. mike

I think your clutch let go, and is no longer releasing. That's also probably why the gearshift lever slipped out of the shifter fork. You were unknowingly "powershifting" the tractor, and the shift lever is just worn enough that it slipped out instead of pulling the (hard to move) fork and popping the tractor out of gear.

If it's an M, you should be able to do a complete clutch and pressure plate job from underneath the tractor without splitting it.

is the clutch disengaging all the way? sounds like the clutch isnt releasing, that is why the gear grind.
