I am rebuilding the sterring box on my 240 utility. I will be replacing the seals, bushings and woodruff keys. The book says it should be filled with oil. I found grease in mine. Should I use oil or grease? Thanks for any advice.

Fred,
I ordered the parts from Bates Corp. I don't have them yet, but they had everything I wanted.

If you do elect to use grease, it is important to use cornhead grease. It is a very "wet" grease, holds viscosity well at broad temperature ranges and will not form an air pocket around the gears in your steering box. It gives the impression it is almost 2/3 grease - 1/3 140 wt. gear oil. It does not leak easily. It is cheap and most tractor dealerships carry it.

I have a 240U as well and I am trying to find out where the "VENT" is that the shop manual says should be checked to make sure it is not plugged up.

I may be rebuilding my steering box as well. Are the seals and other parts still available?

This has been discussed alot. Since you are changing all the seals, you would probably be good with oil. People with bad seals often use grease or 90-135wt gear oil. I myself would use 135 gear oil so that the grease doesnt get a cavity in it and not lube the gears properly.
