I sure like the looks of a wide front on an H. Now, I know it'll take a 40 acre field to turn it around, but what are the other pro/cons of a wide front vs a tricycle? I use the tractor mostly around the farm to pull wagons and for hayrides... what say you guys?

Sarge,

If you go with a Swartz wide, you won't even notice the turning radius. It is a non-issue as she'll spin around on a dime just as the later model IHs do.

The factory wide fronts are another matter entirely and are indeed a bit of a pain to turn.

I'm selling my wide front end for two reasons:

1) I don't farm, so I don't need it for better farming.

2) I'm restoring the H to look more like my Grandfather's H. So I will be putting a narrow front end on it to match his.

I'm planning on using the money from it to help pay for additional parts for this restoration. We'll see how that goes.

They arent cheap when you find one as most want the original factory ones 6,7 or 8 hundred or more if in top shape.

In 1953, my dad sold the wide front that came with his 51 H. He had bought both narrow and wide front with tractor when new.

Two years later he purchased a 300 with narrow front. Around 1965-66 I gave a guy $100. for a wide front on another 300 and I switched them. Two years later I picked up a narrow front for $15. and I switched my 300 back to narrow front.

Sometime we live and never learn, sometimes we learn a little. With the little bit I have learned, I'd never put a wide front on a Farmall unless it had tyrods behind axle and had power steering. IH improved that wide front greatly when they put tyrods behind axle. I wouldn't even consider the old type with tyrods out front. If you want a truly great Farmall wide front tractor, go 04-06 series or newer.

In my opinion there are only two and they are small.
One is that because the operator can see the tires it is somewhat easier to track where the tractor is going. Furrows with a plow, cultivating, and other situations.
The other is that because the operator can see the tires easily there is less chance of running on into mud that gets the unit stuck. (I do not belive they have much higher flotation except that they are in a different location and may not both get into the mud at the same time.

They limit radical pivot turns
They have more wear points
They are harder to jack up (a bit)
They are less handy for parking in a "condensed" shed or garage
They require more "geometric" loader construction to clear the axle
They can't be driven with one front flat
They afford no more stability on hills (unless restrictors or modifications are made to limit or control center point pivot travel or using a centering spring to control roll, ""my opinion"")
