The tractor hasbeen running fine until now. I have noticed over the last few starts that it would take a few more cranks (& slower cranks) for it to start up. NOW when I push the starter button, NOTHING. When I let up on the starter button, I hear one click. I checked voltage on battery & it is fine. This summer I cleaned all my connections, so I don't think the problem is there. Is my starter bad? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

You need 00 battery cables with a 6 volt system.
I would check the specific gravity in each battery cell to see what the readings are. They should be very close to one another. Readings of 1200 or better are considered good. Loosen the starter bolts to make sure the bendix drive isn't
jammed into the ring gear. Hal

Try the easy (and cheap) things first. Check the battery connections, they don't have to have a ball of goo on them to not work. A film between the connection and cable end will do it.If this is still 6 volt, are you using really heavy cables from the battery? Sometimes the cable ends get corroded at the point where the cable hooks to them and take away power. You could try jump startign it to see if starter works ok with another battery system. If you absolutely eliminate the cables and batery, pull starter, worn brushes can cause this also. I don't know where you live but know here everything(including me) turns over slower lately due to cold.

Starter drive maybe locked up on the flywheel and if so it will do just what you said it does. Take the starter loose and then reinstall it and see if that fixes your problem. If that doesn't try a differant battery, if you checked the battery with a meter all that will do is tell you the volts but not load it. If you don't use a load type tester on a battery you have no idea if the battery is good or not

Took the starter off & reinstalled. PROBLEM FIXED! Starter drive must have jammed somehow. I will have to try starting it a few times & see if it keeps doing it. If so, I will need to repair. Thanks for all the help.

Starter jam is very common on the farmall tractors for some reason. One common cause is a weak battery and when it kicks the starter in it justs doesn't have enough to do more then cause the starter to lock up. BTDT way to many times

Had that problem with my M. I cut some shims from a pop can and shimed the starter out a bit. No problems after that.
