Hi Folks,

I have been working on my stuck M. Come to find out that 3 of the cylinders were not stuck but one of them was. It was stuck bad! So I went on and took the head off (what a job) and found that the stuck piston with about 3 1/2" from the top so I poured some rubbing alcohol and a touch of tranny fluid and lite it on fire. Did that 3 times and took my board and a sledge and started tapping on it from the top. It popped free in about 6 hits. After I got it to slide an inch or two I found that there was alot of rust! So I soaked it in some tranny fluid for a little while and started to push it back up. It started to move from the bottom so I kept going and I got up from under it and seen that the sleeve was coming up with it. So I went on a head and pulled the sleeve out and finally got the piston out of the sleeve. Gonna have to replace the sleeve for sure. Now I'm debateing on to get a new piston or just the rings. Now in the other sleeves there is just enough grove to barely catch your fingernail, what would be the suggestion there, do I hone out the sleeves or go big and get the whole rebuild kit?

I would install a new sleeve kit as the others have suggested. Get the head reworked at your local auto machine shop and have the crankshaft measured. The cam bearings should be replaced too. The machine shop can deternine if the shaft needs to ground undersize or just needs to be polished. If it is worn slightly you can installed .002" undersize bearings. Did that on a Farmall A and the shaft looked brown before they polished it. Hal

Several years ago I bought a SMTA with a stuck piston, ended up breaking the sleeve and damaging piston(my fault). Cost for new sleeve and piston plus rings was not too fr from whole set so went that way. If you are going that far check rod and main bearings for wear.

You might as well replace them all or you will have an unbalanced engine with one new sleeve/piston and 3 weaker cylinders. Plus its easy to find a sleeeve kit but a lot hard to get just one sleeve

If you can feel it with your fingernail, it is probably worn enough to replace. See my post below on the piston ring question. This site has kits for rebuilds that work well. Making it work like new will tickle your soul much longer than a bandaid approach. Also have the crank measured to assure the use of correct new bearings. JimN
