I'm slowly making my way through rebuilding our 48 Super A. The tractor is broken down into major components and I have the engine kit for it. This past week I've been cleaning the block and engine parts in preparation for assembly.

I came across the rear seal retainer and a dim light bulb came on about it. I vaugely remember reading on this forum that it is a good idea to replace the retainer along with the seal.

What do you guys think, should I replace it or will I be OK reusing it with a new seal?

I'll post some pictures of our porject this weekend. Thanks, Greg

Thanks for the advice, I'll inspect it this morning. The photo is the Glyptal drying inside the block. I had to use lamps to keep the temperature high enough for it to cure.

Glyptal is the paint that is used on the inside of engines, cases, electric motors, etc. It has execellent adhesion and provides a slick surface for oil to return quickly to the oil pan. It seals the porous surface of the interior of the block. IHC used a red glyptal, but a friend gave me a gallon of black. At about $60 a quart, I'm not going to worry about the color.

Do a search on Glyptal to find more information and sources for it. Good stuff!

I must say, one more benefit about painting the inside of your engine is how well you must clean it to insure the paint will stick. I got stuff out that I though the machine shop hot tank would have cleaned.

If it is not corroded, or distorted I believe it is fine to use. Many have been abused during attempts to get it off without understanding the location of bolts, and its design. others were decayed from contact with mouse nests/junk in the housing when the unit was idle. If it was not leaking, and looks fine, I would use it. JimN
