Was listening to Spike Odell on WGN the other day and he got to talking about the old FARMALL plant in Rock Island.. Seems he worked in security there when he was younger. I guess the plant which has been closed for years is going to be torn down soon.

When I lived in the Quad Cities in the late 60's and early 70's we would drive by every now and then. Just went to see how many tractors were in the lot. It was always interesting to see all the 1206s sitting there. I'm an Oliver guy, but I did like that tractor.

That plant and the John Deere headquarters building were on our "driving tours" of the area for any of our visitors. It is too bad the old manufacturing plants are disappearing.

Can anyone tell me the specific location of the factory?

I may try to get out there next week for some pictures.

Abandoned/Historic/demolition photos are my hobby!!

Thanks,
Chuck

About a year or so ago there was a very nice article in the IHC Harvester Hightlights quarterly magazine about the Rock Island plant. One thing I remember quite well is that Amos and Andy (of pre-TV radio fame) were brick layers on the plant when it was built. It mentioned they couldn't work on weekends as they had to return to Peoria, Illinois, for their weekend show.

Anyone have any idea how much is left of the plant?

The old plant isn't much to look at anymore. When we went through it in the 806 era, it was very impressive. Could have taken a tour every week & still not have seen everything you wanted to. Retirees took small groups through[maybe10 to 20 people] & of course they led the tour group through their "favorite" area of the plant. Now a tour couldn't go through without a suit of armor & a football helmet on.

That's a good idea. It would be awesome if you posted them here for the rest of us to see. I've never seen a tractor factory before.

Those things get to me. They recently tore down my old school, I only went there 3 months before we went to the new middle school, but the buildings been there since the 1850s. Instead of spending 500,000 to renovate, they spent 2 million on a new middle school. For the first year, the roof leaked and ruined alot of stuff. Stupid painted metal standing seam roofs, or should I say contractors. It's just a sin. The new school isnt any bigger, just newer. There are alot of factories here in Fostoria, OH that are abandoned. Some of which are Fostoria Glass factories. Luckily, they are protected by the historical society and will probably be around for some time. I'd kinda like to go in there, but I'm sure there's no tours and they are probably unsafe as well.
I guess times change... In 200 years no one will know we even existed.. Oh well...
Live Life, and have fun!!

Maybe I should find me a wife and have kids so I wont be alone in my later years... AHH, I feel the onset of depression coming. I better go do something fun before I get in to deep.
