I rebuilt "Nellie"(W-4) last winter soon after that ..(cause of the oil leak) I noticed a loose hub on the axle ..right side. I check it every time before use and it is always loose. ...stands to reason that that side would be the one to loosen ..all that horsepower/torque!! Now ...every time I use the ole gal to bring another load of firewood home for "us" I can hear that axle/hub shuck when ever the torque is reversed!!! I do have a "parts" tractor but with cleaning painting and all else involved, I'm thinkin just spot weld the splines! any thoughts from you gentlemen would be welcome. Rod

Thanks for your thoughts guys. To clarify I wasn"t thinking of welding the hub to the axle. ..was thinking of a few spots of weld on the axle to tighten things up. ..could be tricky though ..gettin the right amount on. thanks again Rod

In my other hobby we use loctite for spots where fittings are a tad loose. I would use blue loctite, the red would make itnearly impossible to get off later down the road.

I have a W6 like that and I drilled two 3/8 holes parallel to the axle where the axle and hub meet and put in two 3/8 rods across from each other. Try to drill so that half of the hole is in the axle and the other half in the hub.It is sort of like adding a couple of extra splines. If you want to pull the hub the rods just slide out and nothing is ruined. It has worked well.

I don"t think that I would weld it. I"m guessing that the weld would break loose again and then you"d have a boogered up axle and/or hub. If you replace the hub, the axle may be okay yet. It would be an easy fix if that"s the case. I have a W-4 that does the same thing. I"m trying to pretend the clunk is not there.
