PTO jumps out of gear

I recently restored a B Farmall. I hooked it up to a 4 foot mower to try it out. I pulled forward the PTO lever to put it into gear, no problem. I let off the clutch and moved forward with the mower working fine, then after about ten feet I notice the sound of the mower slowing. I reached down to the PTO lever and it was in the back position (out of gear). This happened multiple times. While rebuilding the tractor, I installed the pully and gear housing for the PTO shaft, without putting in any shims. I have two. Any guesses if that is the problem?

Thanks

Sounds to me like the pto sleeve that has the two prongs on the end and enguages to the main shaft in the tranny is worn and probably the main shaft is maybe also worn too much to keep enguaged. You can pull the assy off then you can see how if works. If you want a quick look take the top tranny cover off then you can see how it works. Now if the main shaft isnt worn too bad you can remove the rear pto assy and then take the sleeve and relieve it so the edges arent worn and the two dogs will seat better. I have done two of them and using a GOOD file releived the two dogs fingers or whatever you want to call them so they seat better. If the sleeve is shot i have some good ones.

TKN: I expect your B is much the same as later models and has a detent ball type end on a small plunger to hold the engage lever engaged or disengaged. On the inner end of shaft from engage lever is a flat plate with two positions for ball end to seat in. One is engaged position and the other disengaged. Just behind the lever shaft is a plug, behind that plug is a spring, and the plunger with ball end.

I had some trouble with one of those this fall. PTO hadn't been used in awhile and the spring and plunger were gummed up with sludge and rust.
