I was down at a friends shop today and they had discontinued use of one of those presses that you operate with a hydraulic jack. "We have quit using it and we are going to get rid of it...you can have it if you want it" Boy, I jumped on that cause I am always needing to press somethig out of something.

Its one of those things that is spring loaded up and you jack it down against the spring.

Well, I got it home to unloaded it...and was reaching over the top to grab it to lower if off the truck...my son dropped his end on the concrete floor...and when he did, the cylinder sprang full up...apparently it was stuck full down...I got my hand hung in there...I am going to live but my hand is sure swelled and hurting...going to Dr tomorrow to have an xray to see if anything broken...real painful to type here--hurts just about as bad as the time I got my finger hung in the overhead door as it was closing!!! :-)

Should it become impossible to type with your hand, try typing with your nose. Just be careful you don't get it caught in any springs or doors.

I'm glad you're still able to type about it. Well I hope you and your son learned a valuable lesson. Compressed springs fall under the category of stored energy in OHSA's rule book. I personally witnessed a similar incident with a semi truck pancake cylinder when one of our young inexperienced helpers removed the clamp over the drum just as I walked through the door it just missed my head and went through the drywall and stuck in the inner wood siding liner. I couldn't speak for a few minutes but he and I had a long conversation later mostly one sided. I know he felt bad about it but he has turned out to be a fine mechanic since and I know even to this day he is very sorry. Hope all is well with your hand. CT

One of the factors is keeping the lower slider straight. I welded some rollers from steel caster wheels to some 1/4"X2" strap to follow the slider downward to prevent cocking while being used. Sorry to hear about the incident, get well. JimN

Might have been cheaper to buy a new one.
