Going to pick up a cub this Saturday that has transmission problems. It will not stay in reverse but will stay in first no problem. What do I need to look for in the tranny? Detent ball, shifter fork? Any imput and advise appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

The poppet (detent) ball may be missing, or the spring broken. The Cub I am working on had a missing detent ball. Apparently someone had been into the transmission before and lost it and put it back together without the ball. It would stay in gear even without the ball, but the shifter did not feel like it was in gear. It's been a while since I fixed mine, but I believe you have to split in front of the transmission to get the shifter rods out so you can replace the balls and springs.

Thanks for the input guys! It is a 1949 cub so when I get it to the barn Saturday I will pop the shifter cover and have a look inside.
Thanks again.
Tim

I just finished rebuilding a Cub transmission as part of my restoration process. Mine had a broken shifter fork. They are just made from stamped metal and seem quite fragile. If I remember correctly, there is only one ball that drops in and out of the detents for each side of the gear pattern, so it would seem that it may not be the ball unless there is crud in the detent in the reverse side. The forks are actually mounted on shafts on each side of the transmission. If you take off the top cover you should be able to see if the forks are OK. If it is a ball detent problem or a fork problem you will have to split the tractor as the shifter shafts come out of the front of the transmission. Roger
