I have been trying to get the shimmy/wobble out of my front wheels--it really wiggles when I get it in road gear. Anyone know the quick fix?

Sorry Tom, no quick fix. The tire pressure trick only partially helps, and doesn't cure the problem.

What you've most likely got is several small slops combining to create one huge honkin' slop. The teeth are likely somewhat worn, creating a little slop. The splines on top of the vertical shaft are somewhat worn, creating a little more slop. The bushings holding the vertical shaft are also somewhat worn, creating a little more slop.

Had trouble with the 450, & it turned out to be the splines in the upper bolster gear were worn. Put in a used gear, & no more problems.

Check the bushing on the steering shaft, Sometimes you can rotate the the flat gear to use different teeth when the wheels are straight

a quick fix, down and dirty, not the rightway , if its a narrow front, drop one tire air pressure ablout 10lbs lower than the other.
also check if the rim is centered on the hub, there is a little wiggle room there.

You might also check that the tie-rods are tight on the spindle shafts. But I guess I am making the assumption of a wide front in that case. Tallperson

Tom
I do'nt know that this is the quick fix but we'll start here.
1 make sure the gear on top of boltser shaft is tight.
2 make sure the bearing on end of steering shaft worm is good an the nut tighten against it.
3 their is a bushing in housing right under the half or (whole) gear that gets wore and lets the boltser shaft rock back an forth.

Good luck

Bill
