Was there two different seat set-ups on the early M's One with the big spring (like the later models including the super m's )and the ones with the small spring in front of and a tool box under the seat. I have seen both on restored tractors. Which one is correct! Thanks

There were actually 3 different styles of seats on the M. The first had the small spring in front and the seat support was made out of two pieces of C-channel bolted together to form a 110 degree angle. It had a toolbox under the seat and was used from serial number 501 to 9286.

The 2nd and 3rd styles were used from serial number 9287 and up. The second was the same style as the first, but with the seat support a single piece of curved pipe, and the sheetmetal toolbox made to fit the curved pipe. The third style was the one with the big spring and the shock absorber. There were also two different styles with the shock absorber, the one used from serial #9287 to 165270 had a long shock absorber behind the spring, and from serial #165271 and up had a short shock absorber in front of the spring.

I barely remember our old M seat having some sort of a crank up front, between your legs. It was some sort of an adjustment to give more or less spring or tension to the seat. My dad didn't like this seat, and replaced it with another type. Maybe the one I am describing was an aftermarket seat, dont know. This was in the mid 60's.

What you described is an aftermarket seat. The original seats for the M never had a spring adjustment.
