I started my 300u this am it was about 30 degrees above. It doesn't have T/A, has a loader in front and a snow thrower behind. The PTO was off, and the transmission was in neutral. I hit the starter without depressing the clutch, the engine started and the tractor took off forward. It went six or eight feet before I got the ignition turned off WHAT CAUSED THIS????? ?Scared the bejeebers out of me, as I was standing on the ground on the right side near the ignition switch, against the back tire - think I invented some new dance steps. Good thing it was outside.

My 350U did all kinds of crazy stunts over the years including get stuck in gear. Too be safe, I always used the bucket as an emergency brake and ALWAYS used the clutch when starting. If you angle the bucket down slightly when you park it, it will dig in prior to moving forward. I NEVER got off the tractor while it was running.

I have had a worn shifter pop out of the slots before. shifter feels like it is in neutral but transmission is actually stuck in gear.

Sounds like when you last took it out of gear the shifter did but the tranny didn't. You may find you have to open up the tranny and line things back up. I have a tractor that will hang in a gear some times but if I put it back in that gear and shift it out again it shifts as it should. When even I park one I park it out of gear and make sure it is by letting the clutch out then shut it down. That way I know its out of gear. If you shifted it out of gear then started it then you could also have water/ice in the tranny and it frooze in gear

Hi Jimer, glad you were able to dance out of the path of the rear wheel.
That is the reason for the clutch starter safety switch on newer tractors.

Very common for me to start tractors in front of the rear wheel. But it was drilled in my head as a kid when we crank started them to always make sure the thing was in neutral. Even so as a general rule, I push the starter button a couple of revolutions with the switch OFF.
