Hi guys I do not post often but I learn a lot by reading. I have looked in the archives and did not find much info, I have a head off of an M tractor some where aroun a 49 maybe, and the casting number has been ground. The 8 and the 0 are barely rouched and the last two are pretty well gone. It has the same volume as an 8060 and it looks like the last two are 60. Any ideas why?? thanks Doug from Colorado

the heads and blocks that have the numbers ground off and new ones stamped on are factory remanufactured from ih.

I found a similar thing on a SH head I put on my H - numbers on top ground off and hand stamped numbers on the side. I thought that maybe somebody screwed up at the foundry, but it seems pretty widespread. Must be a reason, because it seems like a lot of extra work to go to if you didn"t have to.

The head on my M is the same way. I was told that the head was cracked, and was repaired, and the repair was done in the area where the number is. Take a good look at the outside of the head. Usually the 8060 number has been restamped in another area.

I have 3 H heads the same way. The casting #s on top of the head have been ground off, and the part # for a gas head has been stamped on the side with hand stamps. I think the dealers may have done this when the converted the tractors to X1 (Gasoline engine.) The X1 on the serial # tag has been added also. Maybe they milled the heads down to increase the compression. ken

Don't think so. The distillate head and the gasoline are different in many aspects, they do not even share the same valves. I think if an IH dealer actually did any conversions, most likely a brand new high compression head would have been ordered in. I would imagine that the most a dealer would have done is swap the manifolds and possibly rebuild the carb to gasoline specs. I really am just guessing.
