Well folks, not much activity on YT here this morning, so I went to the shop. Turned out No. 1 plug, brought her to TDC on compression. Removed the distributor cap and bingo, the rotor is pointing about 130 degrees off No.1.

Pulled coil, distributor and drive, sure enough the gears are toast. It was full of white grease, but also had quite a pocket of water in there, thus I had a mass of grease and rust. Just another case of a tractor not working enough. Those gears were new 8 years ago and regularly greased. Condensation.

Soon as business hours come around I'll give CaseIH a call, see if they have it in stock. Probably half decent chance as very likely all C-123 engines take the same drive gears. With any kind of luck, I'll have 130 going by nightfall.

I really didn't want to put the snow blade on 140, save that job for my worn out beater tractor. Bob no deal this time, 130 will be alive and well shortly. I see those damn mice are lugging my seat cushion off to the torgue tube again. Pile of cushion debries direct under clutch adjusting hole in torque tube, where tractor had been sitting for a month. Can't understand those guys, two old coats and some carpets ends in pile at end of shop, not a mouse in that.

Coffee is on, or a more innard warming beverage...

159 Thomas St., well you are in our phone directory. Then I can assume if I drink the whole 40, you'll lay $38. on the counter at Vincents. Sounds like a good deal to me, at least equals or betters what Bob M was offering.

Sounds about the right price for a dealer item.

banjo: I wasn't surprised, just rathered annoyed these can take such a jump in 8 years. Here in Canada our government claimed they had inflation licked ten years ago, less than 2% per year. I always been curious what they are buying to achive this. Sure aint the same things I buy.

Question I'm starting to ask myself, is did I do something wrong with installation 8 years ago? I've just come in from cleaning it up and what I found with gear housing, while it was full of grease, the grease was full of crushed ice. It looks as though that ice went through the gears a few times as well. Probably it wasn't crushed ice when I started the tractor yesterday morning. After cleaning these parts I'd say ice probably did the damage. Has anyone else ever found ice in distributor drive? I've never seen it before in close to 50 years since being around these tractors. I could see it having water if it was way low on grease. This one was full of grease, even had gobs of grease come out when I pulled the distributor and also the shaft from back side as well. That drive has been regularly greased every 6 months as long as I can remember.

Got me puzzled, 1st gears lasted 40 years and replacements only 8 years. I must have done something wrong. Any ideas? I don't want to do it wrong again.

Hugh,

I had a similar problem with condensation in the distributor cap on my H. It cleared up after I rebuilt the motor.

Mice are as lazy as people. They will save steps wherever they can. Maybe seat cushion is softer than coat material.

Brownie: I would have thought the mass of coat and carpet material would have been more comfie than a wee layer of seat material in a cold torque tube.

Got to CaseIH, didn't have part in stock, still available though. They did have the price in stock, $160. CAD. Seems like a lot of inflation since I last bought those for $28. 8 years ago. If that is an indication of where the complete rebuild will fit, perhaps I should just consider 130 parted out.

Hugh, I was just reading your post this morning about your situation with your 130. Glad to hear that you got the problem figured out. Let us know when you get it up and running again. But at least I can't think of anything better to do on a cold (15*) saturday morning than get a cup of hot coffee and head to the shop to tinker with a red one. Good luck
