Working on a 1940 farmall B,can't get good spark
installed new points and condesor from case-ih dealer, impulse is good and strong, but spark at points is erratic and faint, and no spark at plug,
I gapped the points at .013 as per OT specs could I have a weak coil, or do my magnets need recharged? Any way to test these components? Any help or suggestions very appreciated

Rub a piece of 320 wet or dry through those new points, then take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean them several times. Then see if the engine will start.

You can check your magnet's magnetism by holding a flatblade screwdriver near them to see if they pull that screwdriver with a lot of effort. If the magnets appear ok pull that coil wire from the cap and hold it within 1/8-1/4" of good ground
while some cranks over the engine. You should have a good hot blue spark. If it isn't, the coil may be weak. Make sure there's no carbon buildup on the rotor. These new condensers have found to be defective and I would replace it before buying a new coil. Hal
PS: Disconnect the ground (kill) wire at the mag for the time being until you get the engine running.

Are the new points clean and shiney, or did you gap them with an oily feeler guage... even a fingerprint on the feeler gauge can transfer to the points, and mess them up.

Do you have the "kill" wire from the switch completely removed from the mag, to rule out a bad wire or switch from bleeding away spark energy.

Have you checked for spark coming out of the high-tension tower on the coil, BEFORE it gets to the cap and rotor?

IF you have spark coming out of the coil, do you have the little gears that drive the rotor timed correctly?

For COMPLETE mag service information, here's a link to the IH Blue Ribbon Mag Service manual on the Cub Collector's site.

You will have to copy and paste it into your browser's address bar, as it won't post as a link on this site.
