Howdy, Boys:
Now, that I am getting closer to owning an M or H of my own, I need to pay attention to what the cure is for one popping out of 5th, (or sometimes 4th AND 5th.) As I recall, it seems the cure is not a major problem? One more time, can you share that imformation?
Thanks.
mike

If it is jumping out of 4th and 5th it is very likely the trans pilot brg. unless the detent spring is really weak on that shift fork.

This is definitely good to know... The M I am buying has the same problem. Apparently it goes up a hill just fine in 5th, but when it "unloads" at the top of the hill, it pops out of gear. But, you can hold it in with the gear shift lever. So does this mean that the 5th gear is shot?

Most likely the 4/5th slider gear is worn out, meaning the inside teeth that engage the driving gear are about gone. Being able to hold it in gear with the shifter is another symtom of this situation. It will eventually get to where you can't hold it in if there is any load to speak of though. Also a worn pilot bearing will add to the problem.

When you shift into 5th does it fell like it "latches" into gear. If not, it could be broken or weak "shift poppet" springs.
Still need to take the top off though to replace them.

Yes it could be a major problem... either the shift fork is bent, or in the case of fifth gear, the little nubbins they call teeth which comprise fifth gear are worn sufficiently away. (usually from trying to speedshift into fifth gear, and grinding the teeth away). I believe either way, the cover has to come off and trans input shaft must be removed,and-or replaced.

In a car or truck with a stick shift transmission
that was usually caused by a worn synchronizer.
Probably don't hear that word anymore. Hal

It MIGHT not be a major problem, but then again the 4-5 slider gear could be ground off inside the tranny from previous owner(s) shifting while the tractor was rolling and grinding the gears.

Another possible cause is a bent shifter fork.
