This is probably controversial and maybe beaten to death here before....however, I need a tip on what is a good overall, quality book on Farmall tractors please. I searched archives and didn't seem to find what I need. I am interested in IH models from a while before the F20 up through early 1960 models. Models, photos, options, data. Thanks for any suggestions. I see there are quite a lot of IH books out there.

Dennis

along with several others and I need to cut back.
I don't know what the C.H Wendel book is worth? It
is in new condition. Chuck

Thanks for the note Chuck. I don't know what the book is worth if it an earlier edition and hardbound. I did look up the current edition which is softcover and they run $22 to $30. Not sure they are the quality of the original. Which edition do you have? I would be interested depending on price.

I'm at: dbt@ritzville.com

Let me know what you think and your guess at price. Dennis

I suggest Guy Fay's "International Harvestor Tractor Data Book" as a good starter book. I carry mine in my pickup all the time. Also, it only $12.95 and is available at Tractor Supply.

150 Years of IH Book................. in reply to DennisT, 12-06-2006 21:57:24
The 150 years of IH book by Wendel is still in print. Charles took it to Krause Publishing to have re-run. It is now a soft cover book that has an M on the cover.

When the book was made, it was "THE BOOK" on IH, because it was the only book on IH. Several books have been made since then that easily out do this work.

IF Wendel would ever update this book, he could have a real good seller.

Ken: Thanks for that, my old hard cover is starting to show it's years from being loaned. I hadn't really heard anything up here. Last time I was at my usual book retailer his shop was locked up. Age tends to do these things to small country shops.

I just bought the 150 year book -- it's ok, but I'm a little disappointed because the original photos were not reproduced very well. Better than a copy machine, I suppose, but still not very clear. Still much better than not being able to buy it at all, though.

When Charles did this book, he was allowed access to the IH archives (when they were still in downtown Chicago). The policy at the time was that NOTHING left the building as original materials.

Wendel built a special fixture to hold a camera and made photos of the photos for the book. THAT is why they are not super sharp. And to quote Paul Harvey, "now you know the rest of the story".....

Dennis, may I suggest your local library. Tractors are/may not be a hot topic but, if you ask, most libraries are under a "parent library-association". I have always found staff are more than happy to search other libraries in their group, even state-wide (La Crossse, Wisc. has done this for me). It may take a week or so to receive the material, but with most offering a three week checkout and renewal, it is a great way to take a peek. Hope this helps (HTH).

Allen, So right you are - shared with the wife and she is still laughing with that one. Probably knows from the wear marks on ours. Thanks for the humor, Hal.

Dennis: You could probably go on a buying spree for a month and I'm not sure you will be satisfied you have the best book. It's a difficult topic due to the vastness of subject material and most authors have tended to deal with subjects they were close to over the years.

As gene suggests, you'll probably not find 150 Years of IH by CH Wendel, unless it's in an auction. It's been out of print close to 3 years. While Wendel covers 150 years he does not go into much detail and indeed has omitted a few items. He tried to cover all tractors and implements.

I think I gave that book Brad mentions to my son 2 years back for Christmas. Haven't seen it since so not certain. I have a neat little book here, which covers tractors only in the time frame you are asking about. Published by Motorbooks International, called International Harvester Tractor buyers's guide, by Robert Pripps. Pripps is quite accurate in my opinion, rates these tractor with up to 5 stars on collectability. He has a section on restoration and rebuilding, lots of photos, at least one on every page. I thought this was a neat little book for around $20. I don't think he missed a tractor between F-20 and 560.

There are numerous other good books, two YT regulars Guy Fay and Bermuda Ken both have books highly recomended by a lot of folks. I think the item you must watch for is the author using the approach that suits what your looking for, we all have different tastes.

If you are looking for a good read try FARMALL: Eight Decades of Innovation. As the name implies it goes from day one to the last. I think it may be the best fit for what you are looking for. I bought my copy at the local Barnes & Noble in town. It was a stocked item.
