Help Getting Started on my Super-M

Hi all,

I need some advice on how best to approach my first tractor project (Super-M). I haven't done anything other than give her a good wash down so far because I don't want to rush in and start messing things up. The engine and drive train run great so I don't plan on any overhauling unless I identify something major. My goal (my wife says fantasy) is to someday have my tractor in parade condition. My tractor lives in an unheated central Minnesota pole shed so any outdoor work at this time of the year would have to be easy removals and installs. What's a Super-M expert's advice on the best way to get started with my restoration? Which manuals and/or videos are the best to work from? I was thinking of going after the electrical system first since it is easily accessible, and it needs work (starter hangs up, wiring's bad, lights don't work, generator is loose). I'd really like to talk with someone on the phone who has happily survived a Super-M restoration and can offer advice on how best to approach this project. Please e-mail me if you care to share your experience.

Thanks!

Hey WannaBe:

Where are you in central MN? My brother and I have a little farmall collection we've been working on. I just bought a SM myself to go along with a SH, SC and 350 utility we're working on. Let me know if you want to chat. I live in Rogers but we have our stuff up near Sauk Rapids. I can fill you in on what I know.

Jay

The electrical system is a very good place to start.....order the wireing harnes, lay it out and under stand it..... .may be tag where each wire will go..... you can just swap out the old one just before painting..... ..rebuild the carb. with a complete IHC kit (~$100)..... new points, cond. ,rotor and cap.....new spark plugs AC86 or Autolite 386 and wires.....these are things that dont take long, for a cold day....be careful when removing the carb. from the govener...read the directions before you start..... ....

Binder Books 503 684-2024 has the orignal and the best manuals..... ...Don

Don,

Is the Autolight 386 the correct plug for an M/Super M? I was under the understanding they take a 3116 and that is what I've been using. My MTA runs well on them but my dad has an M that likes to foul the #3. I'm just wondering if they are too cold of a plug and the 386 is just a little hotter and will help solve the problem or??

Mike

Don't limit your info search to just the Super M's. There is a lot of information that will apply to your tractor from the M, SMTA, 400 and H posts here, and maybe others to a lesser degree. However, I don't think the Cub posts will help much.

Fix the obvious things first, such as the generator being loose. Find out why and then fix it. The next thing, as already suggested, is to get the manuals for your super M. Spend these cold winter days studying and absorbing the information in the manuals, and also take an inventory of the hand tools that you own and determine if you will need to add to that inventory. You will find that the tools you have for working on your car or lawnmower just won't cut it on a tractor. The best source of info and experience will be right here at the YT forums.

How long have you owned the tractor? It's best if the tractor is "new to you" to use it and work it for a while to identify the problems. Many problems won't be obvious unless you run it for a while.
You will need owners manual, service manual, and parts manual to help you through the restoration process.
