well has any one changed there 6 volt system over to 12 by useing a 12 volt gen to keep orginal aperrence? I know i will have to change lights and put a resistor in or get a 12 volt coil with internal resistor but what else/ IM READY TO LISTEN PLEASE HELP I WANT THEM TO START NOT JUST ERRRRR ERRRRR ERRRR AND GET A PULL OR CHARGER CAN YOU CHANGE A 6VOLT GEN TO 12 OR DO I HAVE TO GET ONE OFF A 560 OR 460

Six volt system is fine if maintained in near perfect condition but for us lazy types that tend to let things get in less than perfect condition 12 volt is more forgiving. For some reason ALL tractors, trucks (light duty) and cars went to 12 volts 35 or more years ago IH even saw reason to chande 140 to 12 volts before end of production.

Maintain the existing 6V system and get it up to snuff, and you'll be fine. 12V conversion is just a band-aid on the real problem, which could be bad cables, bad cable ends, bad starter, and/or bad battery. Eventually it won't start on 12V either, and you'll be here wanting to put a John Deere 24V generator and dual 12V batteries on it to get it started, spending several hundred and lots of time when a rebuilt starter for ~$150 or $50 in battery cables would've fixed it.

If the tractor doesn't have an electrical system, then by all means go 12V, but if you already have a 6V, then all it needs is maintenance.

Oliver, I reckon Ive done it anyway possible lol.

1) I've kept the original 6 volt Delco Genny n simply chamged out the Voltage Regulator to a 12 volt n she worked. Im NOT saying its engineering correct or charges at any high rate ONLY that it can work.

2) I've had an old fashioned starter n genny repair shop convert the existing genny over to 12 volts, (involves Field windings) thats probably the best but costs more. Kenneths Classic Generator down in Texas can do it for ya if theres no one locally

3) Go to a salvage yard n get a known working 12 volt genny in the same basic Delco frame size and, of course, a 12 volt VR.

BE SURE N REPOLARIZE THE GENNY BEFORE YOU FIRE HER UP

Then add the external series ballast resistor with the stock 6 volt or else get a full true 12 volt coil and change lights. I wouldnt get into any polarity changes as that involves coil lead and ammeter lead swaps.

I see no reason to convert an H or anythign smaller, possibly an M ifffff ffff shes not in good shape n MUST start at extreme cold temps. If one is a slow cranker at 6 volts try the biggest heaviest highest rated battery that will physically fit in the compartment and use 00 Gauge battery n starter n ground cables...

John T - I could not agree more! A Super M with stock starter and starter switch in good repair, #00 hot and and ground cables, and a properly sized (and charged!) 6 volt battery will start reliably every time.

The only exception is if the tractor has been modified with high compression head, pistons, etc. In this situation converting to 12 volts sometimes is the only reliable starting solution. ...Bob M

Bob: You, John and Nat are quite correct. The proof came to me back in 1956. A then quite new 6 volt Farmall 300 parked at the edge of a 100 acre field and the Temp dipped to -40 overnight. My dad and I went there to get it as a storm was blowing in and tractor was going to be needed next morning to plow snow so the milk truck could get in. With choke out full, the 300 went urr----urr----urr and on that third one she fired up unassisted by any artificial means. We spent the next 5 minutes in the pickup, discussing who was going to do the 1/2 mile drive back to the farmstead. Actually that one probably got decided in the first 30 seconds. You know who got the honor.

The 300 was probably about 7 months old at the time. Since then I've always said any pre 1958 gas Farmall will start on 6 volts, anywhere there is arable land in North America, any month of the year, provided the electrical system is in good shape. One of the most common mistakes I've seen folks make with 6 volt systems, is buy those replacment cables for a 12 volt Honda Civic. 00 gauge cables are a must, with soldered on ends.

Although its been several years, I used to own several M's (was a tractor jockey and farmed full time a while) and as I'm sure you know if one milked the starter to try n just get a piston over versus any just hold the starter switch down (a NO NO) she ought to start. Of course, if shes wore out and/or your ignition is out of tune its a different story. Still it seems manyyyyy y on the boards here are bound n determined to convert and we will still tell em how, being the gentlemen we are lol.

i have a couple 12v letter series. when we did the conversion years ago we used early 1960's chevrolet generators. they are the exact size of the 6v delcos. if you have a shop that rebuilds starters nearby see if they can modify the 6v to 12. my rebuilders always wants the v-reg with the generator when he rebuilds. he checks to make sure everthing is working. i have had several bad brand new v-regs, and it saved some time pullin my hair out.

Many late model Farmalls and internationals were equipped with 12v generators Find one, or buy one new with a regulator anf=d components you site and do it. Same mounts and spacing. JimN
