Fluid in front tires? Dumb idea??

I am assuming that putting fluid in the front tires for weight is a really bad idea. I get this impression since no one here has addressed it, so I am thinking everyone knows not to do it. The main draw back I can think of is at road speeds it could get very unfriendly, along with possibly decreasing the shock absorbtion ability of the tires. Other than that, it would seem to be a good alternative to those little iron wheel weights (of which I have a small stack). Any thoughts? I am not planning to go out and find more problems with this theory.

Most of the guys who pull in antique tractor plow pulls where I'm from use fluid in the front, how else do you keep the fronts down on the old Farmall's and Deere's.

John: I'd hardly think it worth the effort and time on 2 wheel drive tractor. First you would have to find a tube with two piece stem, for adding liquid. Front tires have more flats than rear. You'd be hard pressed to add 40# in a 6.50x16. Got to be a better way.

I was not planning on doing it. Just curious why it was never mentioned. I have a stack of the small front wheel weights ready to go when I need them. I was just wondering if it was a taboo, or just a PITA.

Common thing to do with a tractor with a light front end like say an 8N ford. If your useing the 3 point to lift stuff that would normally pick up the front end it helps a good bit but can be a pain if your going in mud etc because the fronts will dig in a lot faster

John, If you are looking to add wt. You can kill 2 birds with one stone.....Fill you tire with "Fix-a-Flat" gell stuff. On our 4230 it has airplane tires, the carcuss seeps the goop all the time so we just simply had them filled. I am sure we added over 50 lbs to each. Though that wasn't our intention in filling the tires up. It was so we wouldn't run out of goop inside. For the first time there wasn't mutch put in and it got so they wouldn't stay iflated. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

A car with loaded tires? Did you ever get a tractor with loaded tires going too fast down the road and the fluid starts to go around with the tire? That makes for a fun ride!

I bought my IH 660 4x4 with calcium on all four corners and I have decided to keep that way. It also has 12 weights in the rear and two on the front. I would like to find a couple more F%H weights for the front.

You can put fluid in the front tires - in my experience, the wheel bearings will go out more often than if you just hang weights on the frame - I do not know why, but that's the way it worked.

We don't use chloride in the fronts anymore because they usually go flat more often than the rear tires, and it gets expensive to call the service truck out every time. OR have to get a loader to get the wheel/tire in the back of the pickup and have chloride leak in the pickup box all the way to town.

I've seen it done on tractors before. A side story. My grandfather sold and serviced tires for his whole life. He told me a story of a wealthy man that insisted on having the tires on his cadilac filled with calcium chloride because he felt it rode smoother. Years later they found the mans wife buried in the basement, so you have to wonder about his reasoning.

There's nothing wrong with that idea. Most folks like the flexability of weights that can be bolted on, or just hung on. That way the weight can be easily removed when not needed, but if you will not need to remove the extra weight, adding liquid ballast might be the way to go.
