Just a quick vent:

Is it the in thing now to say "needs replaced" instead of "needs TO BE replaced?" Seems like it's popping up everywhere and it's driving me up a wall!!!

Needs fixed...
Needs cleaned...
Needs repaired...

If you want to say it like that, it's:
Needs fixING!
Needs cleanING!
Needs repairING!

Otherwise, it's:
Needs TO BE fixed!
Needs TO BE cleaned!
Needs TO BE repaired!

I feel better now. I just needs vented. :)

I understand the venting, however some of the posts below say they don't even try to read through a post that has no capital letters, no puncuation, and poor grammer. I think that is a bit ridiculous because alot of people that don't use perfect grammer might have a wealth of knowledge about old tractors. My grandpa was one of them he had a sixth grade education but 65 years of farmall experience. I know my grammer is not perfect and when I post something I usually am in a hurry so I don't take time to make sure everything is proper, I am just trying to get a point across to someone. Just my thoughts and I'm not knocking anyone for using perfect grammer I agree it is easier to read. I know my grammer is not perfect in this post. Brian

I guess all said and done we all have problems with generation changes. I have vented to my children how important good spelling and gramer are. That came back to bite me in the rear end as my oldest son brought me some of my great grandmothers letters. He asked me to read them and explain everything as I went---without rereading. I had to admit every generation makes changes.

The kids always ask many questions to me as What is a hot water heater, or why would you need to heat hot water? or the reason to even have one?

In the winter the HWY patrol reports the HWY's are 0 to 100% ice packed, that should cover it these cold winter days--and July days as well.

The kids make it a point to ask me why the English language is so stupid. How many 2's do we need, there are to many there's,buts, and whats up with the letter Q not being able to work it alone? PH sounds like what?

I ain't had much school housin, but tell them it is just like religon, don't ask why-- it is just because I was taught that way and everybody else in this world just don't know any better. So till I get the time to tell them why everybody else in this world is wrong --- so you will just have to do as I say is correct.

Yea It is upseting to read some posts, (like my post) untill you think over the real reason we enjoy this fourm, to get smarter from those that have been there an done dat. I personaly like to hear from those who know the answers, and perhaps do not know how to spell perfect. Rather just good answers and time and cost saving tips, from the school of hard knocks. If we were to get only answers from the gooder spellers and gooder gramer dudes we probably would be looking at blank pages. I certiany would hate to be judged by my spelling most of the time. I'm also reasonably sure if a expert was to examine all the perfect posts, they could also find falt. The younger generation seem to comunicate very well with their short cuts, I can't always understand,(perhaps their intent) My youngest son said that they are just correcting words the dumb generation ahead of them have screwed up.

I have no idea of most of the ages on this fourm, but like myself the older I get the more things tick me off---the more things tick me off the less attention folks pay attention to me, the next step as years progress is for all folks to avoid me as I scream at the staff at my nursing home from behind a locked door. Yes, there is always room for self improvment, yet I certianly hope that a expert on old tractors, and a not so good speller will answer my questions regardless, and I also hope they feel good about helping others.

I have a big fat stomach, and I have never eaten to many meals where the small fork is where it is supposed to be, such as a expert tells me on the TV as the proper way. I don't eat my salad first always, I can burp the ABC's pretty much in order, and the butler has had alot of days off it seems. So far I never drank wine the way the wealthy upper class does. Yet heck I bet I can tell them better how to fall off a bar stool and not even feel embarased till someone the next day tells me about it.

Up here in NE IA we never marry anything closer than a sister, yet we somehow seem to get alot of onlookers that love our peacful way of life and want to retire here.

I hire alot of summer help, and have had alot of good folks including many teachers. A few were English teachers that sure knew alot about ---English--- Yet, overall they knew alot about ---welllll---pretty much English.

I must add a little humor to this long post. Several different friends of mine sent notes to school with their seven year olds. The teacher assumed she was obligated to correct the spelling and punctuation in red ink and return it with the children to their parents. Long story short, most folks thought that it was not in her best intrest to correct, or actualy insult the parents. (Kind of like the saying that those who live in glass houses---) So ended up there was a strong push for everyone in our small comunity to help the teacher become aware of her improfection, the mistakes in her life and teaching job. It took her about a year and a half to find out that there was better jobs in the other side of the state.

So to sum this up I will read all the posts even if you do spell all the words correctly. Heck yea I mispseled alot of words in this post, but you must realize they hung my dad for stealing horses, my mom worked the street corners, and I never been normal since the mule kicked me in the head as a child --so what did you realy expect from me? In a perfect world all communication is clearly written with excellent grammar and perfect spelling. The beauty of this forum is the wisdom and caring expressed by people who have lived and loved old tractors and lots of other things. I'm an ex-English teacher who ignores writing errors here to get something far more wonderful. Let's not put blocks in the way of open, helpful information nd friendship. Have a great day.

One I get from my 14-year-old is "It's the same difference."(when comparing two things).

My response: "No, if they're the same, there is no difference. If they're different, then they're not the same."

One my dad drilled into me(referring to cars/equipment): it is NOT a motor; it's an engine! An internal combustion engine! Motors are electric!

Yes, I realize I have a sentence fragment there. Bad me! lol

Have you ever seen an "enginecycle" similar to what the Harley-Davidson Motor Company makes. What were and are the main products of Ford Motor Co, General Motors, American Motors, Packard Motorcar, and Motorola. Yeah, Motorola doesn't quite fit unless you understand they got their start putting vibes into automobiles.

Your point is very well taken, Nat.

The closer we stick to standard English, the better we communicate. Proper spelling, punctuation, and capitalization make posts a lot easier to read and enhance the poster's credibility.

When I see a post in all caps, or no caps, or with no punctuation, or with half the words misspelled, I don't bother to read it. It's not that I'm a snob or that I don't think the post is worthwhile; it's simply that trying to decipher it aggravates me to the point that I go cross-eyed and get headaches.

When I post I try to do a quick proofreading, but now and then an error slips through anyway. (Grrrr!) I once suggested to Kim that she consider finding a way to include a (strictly optional) spelling checker for the forums. I could certainly use one myself, but I guess it isn't a priority for her.

Anyway, this is still a great forum. It seems to work well for everyone -- those who aren't bothered by the nonstandard stuff can read it all, and guys like me can go on to the next message. No big deal.

Sven was driving past Oly's place on the way home from church and noticed a sign at the end of the drive which said "Boat For Sale".
He decided to stop by and knock on the door.
"I saw your sign Oly, but you know you don't got no boat. All you got is that old tractor there and a hay wagon"
"Ya" says Oly. "And they're boat for sale."

catseye-how insensitive of you to make fun of "my people" how dare you. Let me see, who can I run and/or call with my complaint. The ACLU, Public Radio (I do listen to it-Larry Meiller on Wisc. P.R.) The New York Times, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN. Why, as a Norwegian hyphenated American, I have been assaulted. Maybe I should run to Jesse Jackson. Maybe he can bring about an affirmative action program for us heterosexual, full-blooded Norwegian hyphenated Americans. That was a great job...lmao!

I gave up on people's lack of decent grammar years ago. Now I'm only bugged by things like "tractor is perfect...except for - followed by a long list of broken, rusted, or missing parts." as well as those who don't know the difference between restored and refurbished.

Well, I guess I'll join in with one or two of my own.

How about when a classified ad reads "FOR SELL-1949 Farmall M".....then someone writes them and asks "Did ya sale that there tractor yet?" Maybe it's a regional pronunciation thing, but it makes one want to lock those people in a cell on a boat and let them sail away.

Another one, kinda off-topic, is when someone writing a news story about a race, whether it's cars, horses, chickens, or whatever, writes something like the following: "Joebob crossed the finish line five car-links ahead of Billy Ray"..... .what the heck is a "car-LINK"???? It's supposed to be "car-LENGTH".

Ok...I'm off the soapbox.....next!

Mine is the misuse of the words weigh , weight and weighed . As in - How much does fluid weight in a rear tire ? WHAT?? Shouldn't that be - How much is the weight of fluid in a rear tire ? Maybe I'm wrong since I have never learned what the difference between a verb and an adverb or any of those other things are called . I just write the way I talk .

Glad u feel betr, i no i do now. Yup, this grammer stuff can really get under my fingernails also - to, too, two. Sum folks will call this post picky, picky, picky. But too that I say HEY! Most of us on this baord where borne whey back in the last century, when our english teachers were actually teaching and grading. Not giving grades to pass students along the way and being afraid of giving a "deserving grade" would bring them the wrath of administration. {Author will not take one step down on the pulpit} I am relying more on importing my postings from word processing software into the Comments: box. Exspecially since ofn i do"nt get things spelt wright. hydrolics/hydralics/sheet metal is straiht/Farmal/a nd/LOTS OF OTHER STUFF GETS MY GOAT ASLO/knot that "im the greatest worksmith, butt. Anyway, whilst on the vent mode _> WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE EXPRESSION "...your welcome". This business of "...not a problem" drives me up a wall! It shouldn"t "be a problem" itz youre job. I want to hear "you"re welcome". Thank you for the great post.

I have a friend who doesn't know the difference between "taut" and "taunt" as in "that rope is plenty taunt". I wonder if he is just taunting me?

When I was in the service 40 years ago, I saw a booklet titled "Preventative Maintenance" at the motor pool. The use of "preventative" instead of "preventive" has been bugging me ever since.

And that brings up the use of "ever" instead of "every". I think that might be a southern usage thing.

(I hope my spelling and grammar is OK)

Doesn't the use of 'spelling and grammar' create a compound subject, hence requiring the use of a pluralistic verb (are)?
