one half bottle of mmo in gas tank, the rest in crank case works wonders, for old worn and carboned up engines. RP

Sounds like its running on the lean side to me. What happens if you choke it at the same time your opening up the trottle?? If chokeing it helps then you have a problem with the carb and either the main jet is dirty or needs adjusted if it has an adjustment that is. If it doesn't have an adjustment you might try pulling the drain plug and pulling the main jet cap and spraying carb cleaner into the main jet to clean it. I have to do that once in a while on one I have that doesn't have an adjustable main jet

When it starts to go downhill, try pulling the choke out to richen the mixture a bit. If it picks up, the float level might need raised a bit. If the carb has an adjustable main jet, try backing it out 1/4 turn.

Assuming everything you have mentioned is good (fuel & fire), my first guess would be sticky valves. Although I don't believe in additives, I will used them as a last resort before tearing an engine down. Maybe someone has a recommended additive you could try.

here is a couple pages from an old tractor repair manual, they recommend kerosene for freeing sticky valves, squirt some on the valves, squirt some in each cylinder, and they also say to put a few gallons of kerosene in the fuel tank every now and then
