I bought a 1948 McCormick W-6. According to the serial # (X1B) it has the 5000' alt.gas engine. I pulled the valve cover off and it has the 8060 DB Head and flat top pistons. I thought ths 8060 head was the standard gas head and the pistons were supposed to be pop-up pistons. Charles

Keep in mind that your tractor is 58 years old and has probably gone through several sleeve and piston sets over those years. It would be very unusual to open up a tractor that is as old as yours and find the original pistons. The 8060 head is the high compression gasoline head. It was used on all tractors that were factory equipped to use gasoline. The head will work with flat tops, domed, step head, or fire crater pistons.

Charles,

Sounds like that is not the original engine. Someone probably replaced the original high-altitude engine with a regular C248 out of another tractor or power unit (or a plain old replacement engine, "long block"). Compare the casting code (e.g. "3 11 W", two numbers followed by a letter) of the engine block with the transmission housing. It's very likely that the engine is not from the same year.

cnks is right, the standard factory pistons would be flat. the 5000' ones would be a step head and the 8000' would be a taller stephesd. the firecraters were not made until '61.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong--happens frequently--IH "pop up" along with fire craters did not exist until after M production ceased. In other words they are replacements for the flat tops, you can buy both.
