Clutch adjustment on Super H

I dont know if my clutch is wore out or not. I have a lot of play in the peddle. After you push through the play there is very little travel left. I bought the tractor a year ago and have been gradually fixing up odds and ends. I really have not ran it a lot, never put it under load but the clutch didn't seem to slip. Do I need to rebuild the clutch or is it just an adjustment issue. How do you tell?
Thanks for your advice.

Gene

Thanks so much for the replys. I may not have to replace it after all. Sounds like I just need to adjust it.

Having just performed a clutch job on a Super H...

There"s no "rebuild." You replace the clutch disk and pressure plate, if it needs it. This can be done without splitting the tractor through the large access plate on a Stage II or after removing the belly pump on a Stage I. It"s a little fidgety at times; getting the shaft out and back in is the tightest bit as it lacks but a fraction of an inch of being easy. Could"ve done it in one afternoon if we"d had the parts.

Now, measure your pedal play straight out from the top of the platform. Should be 1-1/8". Adjust the length of the clutch rod until the pedal play is 1-1/8" by removing the pin at the front and unscrewing the rod a couple of turns.

If you can get it back down to 1-1/8" without completely unscrewing the rod from the pedal, you"re in good shape.

If a clutch doesn"t slip and engages smoothly, I would not replace it- it is working like it should. I would look for slop in all the linkage and fix that, then readjust it. If it"s still loose, open the inspection cover and check to see that the throwout fork is not loose on the throwout shaft.
