I am very new to the whole antique tractor scene so please forgive me if I'm asking questions that are very basic to most of you. I'm trying to bring my recently deceased grandpa's old Model M back to life and am struggling a little bit. It would be helpful to know what year it is at least, as I don't have an owner's manual for it. The serial number is FBK180719X1. I just mounted an old model 250 Du-Al (sp?) loader on it and am trying to get it to run decent. I ran this tractor in the hay field many years ago, but I never acquainted myself with it very much at the time. This is pathetic, but I'm drawing a blank on where to check the oil fluid level even. I hope its not the dipstick just forward of the battery box where the tractor splits-that one is bone dry. Thanks for the patience, guys-I'm a pretty young buck!

The dipstick under the gas tank is for the hydraulic system, which pumps all the time the clutch is out. Use 30 weight non-detergent oil, or Hy-Tran from CaseNewHolland, or your favorite hydraulic oil.

If you leave it dry and the shaft underneath is connected, you will destroy the pump.

As with others, oil level is the petcocks, I always fill mine slowly until it comes out the top one.

Hi Steve.

There are no such thing as stupid questions, honest. Its much stupider to have to fix something that broke because you didnt ask in the first place.

I would suggest trying to order the owners manual for your grandfathers (now yours, Im guessing) tractor as a good starting point. There is a link here on this page, or you can check ebay, or even your local Tractor Supply Company or IH dealer.

As far as checking the oil, like Bill said, there are two petcocks located on the oil pan below the engine. you should be able to open the top one and nothing comes out. Open the lower one slightly, and you should get oil.

Im new to owning the antiques myself, but I have used them for years growing up, and everyone here is happy to help.

By looking at the list at the left it is a 1949. To check the engine oil their is two valves on the oil pan. I think on the right if you are in the seat. Keep the level between the two. Bill

I should have just looked a little closer on the site and I would have answered my own question. It looks like this should be a 1949 model to me.
