My 1943 H now runs like a champ, good power/compression, smooth clutch. I am so happy. I just have such a hard time getting it started. All new fluids, new plugs, new electrics, good spark. Probably carberation?

newbie, be sure that you turn the fuel off at the sediment when you park the tractor. if you leave it on, it could flood overnight causeing hard start. RP

You probably need to make you peace with the choke; Farmalls are often picky about how you use it.

Pull the choke all the way out and hit the starter for just a couple of turns of the engine. Then push the choke most of the way in and let it sit for several seconds before hitting the starter again. More than a couple of turns at full choke and you"ll flood it.

If it idles nice and smooth, and has plenty of power, there is not much chance of any carburetor problems. What do you mean by "hard to start"?

By hard to start I mean it turns over until the battery is too weak to continue.

I got it started after a shot of ether with the air cleaner oil pan removed and it ran great.

The next morning, nothing happened and I ran the battery down again.

If you are choking it as described below, the choke plate may be an issue. Remove the big rubber hose on the carb and look into the hole with a flashlight. If the choke rod/ring is pushed in (away from operator) the choke plate should be flat to the ground and not restricting the air flow. If the ring/rod is pulled out, the plate should be completely blocking the air flow with near perfect seal around it. If it is not, or if it is not moving, the little lever on the shaft may be loose, or the plate loose on the shaft, or not centered. They have been known to fall out entirely. Good Luck, JimN
