I have a little Farmall A that I have a mower on that I use around the farm. A guy came by and noticed the A and asked me if I do any trading. My tractor isn"t showy by any means and is just a basic farmer engineered jobby. Here is the kicker, the guy has an M with Charlynn power steering. U-shaped drawbar. He has primered and sandblasted the M. The problem is that the tractor was stuck from where it sat out without any muffler. He has the head off and 2 of the cylinders have the pistons stuck in them. I haven"t seen the tractor but supposedly it has newer fronts and the back tires are ok. It also has rear wheel weights. He told me he had already done the body work on the grille. What is the value of this tractor? He wanted to trade it for my A only. There is no equipment involved and no drawbar on this A. How should I trade if at all? Just looking for opinions.

How good are you at bluffing? Sounds like your neighbor with the stuck M is looking to unload it and cut his losses. If you want the M, you need to make it look, to him at least, like he's winning until after the deal is cut.

The way to do that is to figure out what else he wants. Does he want your A or does he need to be able to tell his wife he made a good deal on selling that M?

One option is to buy his M for say $1500, less a repair adjustment (just between you and him) of $1000. That way he doesn't have to tell anyone about the adjustment.

All things being equal, your "A" with a deck is worth a bit more then an average "M", at least in my area. In this case all things aren't equal, the "M" is a basket case with known issues that will cost a lot of money (guess why he wants to trade) and your "A" is in fair condition.

Don't trade.

There is no way to tell whether or not it is just a couple of pistons stuck. All may very well be stuck. They may be "a little stuck" or the stuck may have turned into a "solid weld" stuck all of which has different consequences. You cannot tell if it, leaks, smokes, knocks, hydrolics or transmission works..a pig in a poke.

I would take the M but not on an even trade but maybe if he was willing to give me about $1,500 boot--and even then, I am not sure I would want the potential heartache.

If he will get it unstuck and running so I can listen to it and make a decision...then another story.

"How should I trade if at all"? Don't trade. If you want the M give him salvage value -- or no more than $500. It will cost you $1000+ to fix the engine, maybe $1200-$1500 if it needs bearings, cam, crank ground, etc. Otherwise, you WILL get took. Sandblasted and "primered" means the M needs to be painted right away or it will rust under the primer, unless he used epoxy, which is doubtful, since most people don't know that only epoxy primer is waterproof, the rest aren't. So, it probably already has begun to rust. Unless you want a major project, forget it. If you do want a major project, keep your A and pay him the minimum amount.

If you want the M, offer him $200, $400 tops, for it, and keep the A.

Sounds like the guy is looking for a sucker. Your tractor is worth around $1000-1500 give or take a little and his tractor on a good day is worth about $150-300 maybe a little more. The guy is looking for something for nothing so to speak and wants you to give him something and you get nothing

I think Allan is right; I'd stick with my "toy, garden variety lawnmower".

That did sound pretty darned bad, didn't it? :>(

I was trying to compare the merits of each tractor as one totally judged against the other and sure not trying to downgrade his or any one else's machine in any way, shape or form.

I wouldn't make the trade. Sounds like you're going to get taken advantage of. keep the A, if you want an M, check for farm auctions around your area. You should be able to pick one up in decent condition and that is running, for under $1000

Jesse,

This is just my opinion so hope I don't get trounced on with fire-balls from every quarter.

All things being equal; both tractors in the same running condition: The A isn't even a tractor, its a toy and it's little more than a garden variety lawn mower. Don't care what the market value is, don't even blink, trade for a real, honest to goodness tractor....the M.

Trouble is: Things just aren't equal. Yours runs and his is just a hunk of stuck salvage yard iron.

I think this guy is trying to hussle you. Tell him "No Thanks" and keep what you have. A bird in the hand, or something like that.

Allan

Allan: haven't begun to trounce you yet. Tell you what, I'll get a steel plate 4' x 10' 3/4" thick, turn it up on the ends like a sled. I'll add enough weight to bring that up to 3 times the weight of my Super A.

You do the same with any one of your tractors, bear in mind you will have to make the plate larger to hold 3 times the weight of your tractor, thus you will have a bit more friction.

On may 1st 07 we will both head for Rusty's in New Market IA. No, heck that wont work, the steel plate will wear out before we get there. Plus I'll need a passport by then. Just let me know if you can pull 3 times the weight of any of your tractors, on a flat bottom stone boat. My Super A has already done it, and done it in front of stands at county fair.

I will give you fair warning, we used to do this when I was a teenager. Unlike todays tractor pulls, a tractor started with full load and had to pull it 10'. Super A will top the pack, Super H will come second, Super M will come 3rd and Super C in 4th place. A tractor driver started with a load he was sure he could pull, he could add weight after each try until he was stumped. Rules call for a 4' chain between drawbar and stone boat. The winner was the guy starting away with and pulling the highest percentage of tractor weight.

That's my whole point.

What else can it do except pull a small yard drag?

Allan

Allan: In the 40 years that Farmall A, SA, SA1, 100, 130 and 140 were built, close to a 1/2 million were sold. someone must have found other uses than pulling a small drag.

I know on our own farm we certainly did. Had a 7' semi-mount mower that would bolt up to either 130 or 300. Why do you suppose we always mowed with 130. We farmed in a country were 7' swath was all a baler could comfortably handle, even sparce second cuts two 7' swathes. In hay like that those little offsets were king on a rake. As I recall we found lot of other jobs for 130 around the farm as it was always on the go.

How about tobacco and small truck garden farmers, probably the single biggest users of offset tractors. Could these guys all have been wrong? I think not, some of them had some quite decent equity when they died.

I'll grant you they may not have been much of a tractor in Nebraska. You've just led a sheltered existance, you seem to have the opinion if it didn't happen in Nebraska, it just didn't happen. Well Allan there have been a vast majority of North American farmers lived outside Nebraska.

Oh, by the way, I'll up the chalange on pulling the drag. If I can find a well musseled team of horses, I'll take on your 966 on highest percentage of each team and tractor, pulling in relation to their own weight.

That M is worth about $300 or less. Most likely less.

Don't know where you are but so far as I can tell, any running A esp. with a mower is probably worth more if not a couple of times more than a straight stuck M. I would be sticking with the A, unless of course you need something the size of the M, in which case I'd probably look for something in better shape. Just my thoughts, tractorsam

I would estimate the value of the A with the mower at $1,500 to $2,000.

In this area of Ontario I would say that $2000.00 for an A with mower would be about right. Plain farm SA, SC go for $2500.00 at auctions all the time with no attachments. A M in none running condition would be around $500.00 if lucky. You would be getting the real short end of the trade for sure. If you wanted a bigger tractor you would be better off just buying a M or selling the A with mower, buy a M and bank the extra $500.00 to $1000.00 you would make.
