300u starter

I just put a new starter drive and brushes in the starter on my 300u. The gears were chewed up on the old starter drive. I have started it about 3 times and all worked well. This morning it was between 5 and 10 degrees below and I went to start the tractor. On the first two times, the starter drive would not engage, the starter just spun. On the third try, it grabbed and the tractor fired up.
Is there break in on a new starter drive? Is it the spring on the new starter drive? Should I let it go or do something, and if I should do something what are your suggestions.
I primarily use the tractor for throwing snow so it is coming into season.
Thanks for any thoughts.

If the starter was spinning rather noiselessly when it was not engaging the issue may be one of stickieness of the lubricant on the spiral drive splines. To make it crank reliably, I would clean the drive splines with brake clean spray, then let it dry. I recommend then lubricating it with a product called Tri-Flo. Putting this spray on the spiral splines will leave behind a dry film of teflon platelets which are slippery on metal, and do not collect additional dirt/dust.

If the starter drive did make a grinding tooth tearing noise when it was spinning and not engaged I believe the application of the above treatment in addition to cleaning up the teeth with a file is in order, as mentioned correctly below. Good luck, JimN

I think your suggestion sounds the most likely. I never did have any problems with the old starter drive, even after I ground almost 1/4" off the end of the gears to smooth them out.
I will try your suggestion at my first opportunity. I really do not have a garage, and a bit cold to work on it outside right now. Am wondering if a few more starts will loosen up the lube on the spiral splines? Thanks for your suggestion(s).

I agree with Jim N.

As long as all you hear is a click and a whirr -- no grinding, clunking, or banging -- it sounds like the starter gear isn't traveling along the shaft to mesh with the ring gear. That's a possible, if not downright likely, result of stiff lubricant thanks to the cold weather.

Rusty may have hit it on the head but, some times its also cause by burrs on the ring gear. If it is burrs some times you can file them off and get by for a very long time but it also can be a stop gap fix depending on how bad the teeth are.

Most likely the teeth on the ring gear attached to the flywheel are chewed up and worn, and there is very little for the starter drive to engage into. You can either put up with problem and hope it doesn't get worse, or you can split the tractor and replace the ring gear.
