Too much idle time while on tractors pushing snow this week. Got an old H a while back for 200 bucks and have access to a Cont. diesel motor out of 350 I.H.Utility. The H motor is shot and the Diesel motor is supposed to be good. I realize I would need a front cover off rowcrop 350 but, would this motor bolt up in there without too much trouble. Now don't jump all over me about non factory --I'm not trying to impress nobody-- just trying to use up this mountain of extra I.H. parts I have in two sheds here. I know the gas blocks for H thru 350 are all interchangeable but was curious if anybody has tried a diesel in one. Th drive train and sheet metal are pretty good on the old H. The diesel motor is complete with pump and lines and manifold and the clutch housing. Or should I go on to dream about the next idea.? Migraine

H Diesel - More than one way to do it. in reply to migraine, 12-03-2006 09:55:17
At the Portland, Indiana Antiqe Tractor and Gas Engine show in August, there was a guy from northern Indiana who was exhibiting a Farmall H that had a Mitsubishi 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel out of an early 80's Dodge pickup. The installation was immaculate, and after a couple of us said "PLEASE" he started it. It ran smoothly and quietly. A few subtle modifications had been made to the hood, mostly to incorporate a 4-gauge cluster instead of the usual 2.
He said the engine put out about 90 hp. The tractor had some wider-than-typical rear tires and (I think) three wheelweights on each side. The owner said it would easily handle a 3-14 plow in 3rd gear.

I'd hate to see a useable 350 ute scrapped out just for the motor, but if the the scrapping has already been done, then I think you might be on to something. I've contemplated doing the same thing, but I doubt if I will ever run across a 350 diesel engine. Another thought is one of those little 4 cylinder cummins engines, or, what would really get some attention, is one of those screamin' little 2 stroke Detroits. There are still enough "correct" Farmall Hs out there that you don't need to worry about being "correct". Have some fun.

Just be sure to take LOTS of pictures of the process and share with us!

I'm betting you will need to use the H flywheel and clutch because the input shaft on the 350 will be different to account for the live PTO and TA.

Switch front cover, side motor mounts, rear engine plate, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and you should be good to go. Does the exhaust pipe come up in the same place as the gassers?

Go for it. I have a 350 U with the 193 diesel in it. Good motor. That would be a good H. I wanted to do the same thing to my H, but those 193s are really hard to get a hold of. I thought about stretching the frame rails and putting a 460 diesel in it. I scrapped the idea when I bought a 460 with a 806 gas motor in it.

Oh Heck,

Go ahead and bolt er up. Winter is too darned long the way it is and ya might as well use up the parts you have.

'Sides, it isn't doing that engine any good just lying about idle either.

Should be an easy bolt in, shouldn't it?

Allan

Yeah - except all my "easy bolt-ins" never seem to quite work that way. Hope this one works out okay for Migrane, because it sure sounds interesting.

The 350 was parted out a few years ago. I was told it had frontend and transmission problems but who knows?? So I guess I have these options: Take a peek in that diesel motor and see what new adventures might await; or try to find another H motor that was good and could be bought reasonable; or sell the diesel motor and the H to someone who really would make this happen; or go back to bed and dream of something else crazy. I know of a 300 rearend here in town that I think I could get cheap but did not even bring that up cause I don't want no late night visitors telling me its time to go with them for a little ride??? Those guys scare me !!!Keep the cards and letters coming so we can all come up with a viable solution here. Maybe a work party at my place to do this as a group of I.H motorheads. Migraine
