Charging Battery on M

The 6 volt battery on my tractor was dead, so I hooked it up to the charger. I hooked the positive post of the battery to the postive cable on the charger. I think this is backwards on account of the positive ground-it was only this way for a couple seconds. Can anyone tell me if I would have done any damage to the electrical system? The battery doesn't seem to take a charge now, even though it is only a year and a half old. Thanks for you help.

I did hook it up wrong for an extended time after I briefly had it hooked up right. When I went inside to check my post and you guys set me straight, I took the battery away from the tractor and hooked it up to the charger the "correct" way, only to have the charger kick out instantly (you could here a relay clicking inside it). I took the cables away from the posts and the charger would come to life again. I must have ruined it!?. Nevertheless, I went to town and got a new Fleet Farm battery, smaller than the original(625 cca) and put it on the cables and I was able to start it. Today I went out to start it and it won't start (no charge on the ammeter). I had left the ignition switch pulled out-would this lead to a discharged battery? What would cause it to drain down if there were no lights on? My true Norwegian heritage is showing throug on this one-thanks for all the help you guys. This is my first time to this site and I like it alot!

You should use a hydrometer to check the specific
gravity of the battery's electrolyte. This will tell you the condition of the battery cells. The readings should be fairly close to one another.
If 2 cells that read 1240 and one has a reading of 1120, you have a dead cell. Battery then needs to replaced. Hal

Steve, Regardless whichever battery post happens to be tied to that huge hunk of iron (Pos or Neg ground) she still charges + to + and - to - off the charger. First insure theres electrolyte above all the plates and that no cells exhibit a gray or milky color and then leave the charger on a long while. If shes badly discharged and/or has sat a long time it may take a while for her to draw a charge especially if you only have a small charger. If she comes up you might have a shop do a load test on it or see if they can charge it in case you cant. If you need my troubleshooting procedure for non charging lemme know

I agree with what Roger says. I would just ask, How do you know the battery won"t take a charge now? Have you tried charging it since the time you had hooked your cables in the way that you THOUGHT was wrong? Sometimes with the corrosion that can build up on battery posts and cables, a charger cable can be a bit stubborn to get solidly connected. Try it again using the polarity as Roger explained and leave the charger on for a few hours. As soon as you get it properly connected you should see a strong charge current reading on your charger"s ammeter. Then that reading will slowly decrease as the charge builds up.

Shouldn"t have caused any damage with the connection you did.

You did right, charger goes plus to plus etc. The positive ground to the tractor is normal for 6 volt sytems and has nothing to do with an external charger. If the battery was dead for a long time stuff builds up in the cell separators and can short the cells out.
