I am looking at buying a 460...just to move some snow with but the TA is out ....It works in high but not low...I know it is very common for the low to be out but my concern will the high go out.....I have had different people tell me you will always have the high it is locked in....Just trying to make a good decision on whether to take a chance on it or not...Just going to use the tractor and loader to move a little snow in the winter.....I have been told it cost about $1000 to get it fixed if it all goes out..... ..... When I bought my 544 the low side was out. It turned out that it was out of adjustment. I adjusted the TA using the straight forward instructions in the operator's manual and it works fine. Not to say that the 460 you're looking at couldn't have a more serious problem.

Tom,
Buy it. The TA is important , It makes the tractor much more friendly and is a main positive feature. For the mean time it will work more or less forever in direct becausw the TA clutch is not being manipulated, it just drives through. Repairs do require splitting, but can be done for (in most cases ) reasonable $ for the ramp/rollers only. JimN

Hi, I have a friend that is knowledgeable about TA's and he claims that the adjustment is important, it is difficult to get it set correctly because of the very limited error in setting it correctly. You may want to check that out if you make the purchase.

I don't think the high side will ever go out, but I do not know for sure, none of the tractors I grew up with and still use have a low side, but high still works fine, we never used the TA and don't miss them. The newer hydraulic TA is a different story, if you ignore them long enough they will act up so bad that the tractor is not useable. And like Wardner said, when I buy one I just assume the TA is out.

With the low side not operational, it means you need new rollers and possibly the ramp they ride in. That's all internal stuff and doesn't affect the gear carrier from acting like a drive shaft in direct drive.

I have a TA that was welded up while still in the tractor. The planet gears are arc welded to the carrier. I am not sure why the previous owner did this but someone might offer a reason. The tractor runs fine and I don't expect any problems on the high side. If you have access to a welder, you could do the same.

If you still have any doubts about buying the tractor, consider the number of malfunctioning TA tractors that change hands every year. For the most part they remain in operation and deliver dependable service.

Now go buy your tractor and let the next buyer fix the TA. I use the TA in my 504 when plowing snow but I could live without it.

I have an explanation as to why the TA might be welded together:

If the low side of a TA were to go out, AND the TA clutch also went out/was slipping - there would be no way to lock it into high range. And, of course the tractor wouldn't move at all. Welding the planet gears to the carrier would lock it into high range, even if the clutch was out.
