Well I got the old H going. It turned out that the points needed replaced and that the new condenser was bad, but the old condenser was good. Thanks to "neblinc" for posting and "John T" for the troubleshooting guide. I will save that for future troubles. Thanks to all you other fellas for advice too. A little history about the tractor: Bought new by my boss's father-in-law's brother back in '46. Then his father-in-law bought it. He put power steering, hydraulic cylinder, and low-high range gearselect in it. He past away last Feburaury and the boss got it. He had been saying he was going to work on it...asking me a bunch of questions about what was wrong...Finally, I started working on it this week and after several years, had her going again! Have a great weekend!

Condensers used on magnetos are not the same value as those in battery ignition and usually have a higher voltage rating. The inductance is different and the condensers are made to match that so the inductive kick is balanced. This is to maximize the "Q" of the circuit and therefore the primaary voltage swing. Also keeps the points from growing tips and valleys.

Congrats on getting the old girl up n runnin. Seems theres a lot of problems with "new" condensors nowadays. I dont own a real capacitor tester, I just half ____ test em with my old Simpson 260 Analog VOM (only a partial pass/fail method) but if things stay this way I may have to invest in one. Thanks for the feedback

Glad to hear you got her running.
Seems bad condensers are kinda the norm anymore?
How many others have gone through that headache, and where were they purchased from?

Randy
