I have an H the belly pump won't lift anything. On e-bay there is a couple of power steering pumps they are not the m/w live power pumps but they go in front of the distributor. In fact right now there are two in a power steering setup. Would one of these type pumps be strong enough to run a hydraulic cylinder. I would like to use the H to pull my 4 row oliver corn planter and two row potato planter now the pump isn't strong enough. I would not use the power steering motor but probably would put that on my M as that already has a m/w pump but steers hard.

Thanks

So, you think if I got a rebuilt belly pump I would be happy? There is also a M/w live pump on e-bay they usually go real high. The tractor was my father-in-laws he got new in 47 so I plan on keeping it but its not much good without hydraulics. I have been pulling a 3 bottom disc plow and it will lift that fair.

thanks
tom

Tom, don't give up completely on that belly pump yet. If you are pulling a plow, it's working the tractor hard, and everything is getting very warm. As the oil in the pump gets warm, it thins somewhat, and a worn pump becomes even weaker with thin oil. Before I'd take the pump out for repair or replacement, I'd drain the oil and replace it with SAE 40 non-detergent. It might make enough difference in a worn pump to let it lift that plow more easily.
Another option could be to replace the plow cylinder with another cylinder having a larger bore. A larger diameter cylinder will lift more on the same pressure.

Tom, there probably isn't all that much wrong with the belly pump you have. It's been a few years since I had one apart so I don't remember the details but I know they are pretty simple. Seems like there are some shims in there that can be rearranged to compensate for wear? Can't remember for sure. See if you can locate a manual that will walk you through it.

Also the link below is a good read about testing, filling, and using the correct oil for your pump.

Those are probably the Behlen power steering pumps. I don't think they are much good for anything other than the intended use. You need to do a rebuild on the belly pump. I used to pull a fully equipped John Deere 495 4 row planter with an H. Dry fertilizer boxes, insecticde boxes, the whole works. The original belly pump lifted it just fine.
