I'm sure this must sound odd, but being new to my 100, I'm wondering if there's a better way to mount an offset Farmall, especially one with a belly mower. I have rear wheel weights so I first step into the ledge in the right wheel hub then launch onto the pedal platform with my other foot, but it seems like quite a bit of effort compared to an H or M. Any better ways out there? Any of you take a running start behind it and vault yourself over the seat like those cowboy movies!?

Marc: I shaking my head a bit, while I do have steps on my tractors now, I still quite regularly step from ground to 130 and 140 platforms. Just a habit from so many years doing it that way. Not certain, but have a feeling I'm the oldest in the crowd, at 64. I find, when in a hurry, if I use the step, most often I hit my shin on the platform.

The step pictured below is being professionally manufactured. I bought mine at RPRU '06. Write me if you want and I will look up the name of the company that is making them. Wish they were available when my dad was alive and struggled to get up on my A.

Marc:
I step up on the front cultivator lifts also. In fact, that is the only reason I leave them on one of my SA's. They are pretty important to me at age 61! My son has a 140 with woods mower, which I/we step up on to get on his tractor.

You have my sympathy!! My super A has a mid mounted sickle mower and the optional Monroe seat which mounts right behind the pedals. The coil spring under the seat pan pushes the seat to within 3-4 inches of the steering wheel when the load (me)is removed. As soon as I stand up, my legs are jammed against the steering wheel. All this, plus approaching old geezerhood, makes getting on and off this tractor a challenge.
I have considered bolting one of those round steps you see on truck wheels to the wheel weight or even putting a ladder of some sort up the back of the tractor.

In spite of this problem, this is my favorite tractor. I have never used a better setup for cutting hay.

When I was younger we always had the cultivators hooked up I would stand on the front lifts and hold on the the steering shaft and push the lift control and ride it up like an elevator. God those were the good old days.

Now tho I dont want to mess my paint up and its even worse cause of the age thing.

Refuse to get a step cause they werent original. A few more years tho and I may change my mind.

While I only have a 300u, I too would have the same problem if it weren't for my loader. My loader has these nifty steps welded onto the main beems, real nice!!

Marc: As the guys have shown you, these are quite easy to fabricate. I must admit, the one for my SA with Woods mower, has not been on tractor since I installed the mower. I use the mower for a step. That still gives my 64 year carcass enough of a boost.

Yeah, well I figured no one would care about an Arizona opinion about farming...

I'm doing good, had a cold this week and am just getting over it. Kids were wild because of a cold snap and lots of wind - so I left early today, took off a whole 1/4 of a day! I needed a couple hours to take care of the paperwork business of selling my car anyway.

How's the weather up your way?

Steps similar to the one Dave pictured below come up on Ebay from time to time. They are the product of a farmer's imagination, not an optional piece of equipment, though.

I guess IH figured farmers were nimble little monkeys back in those days :)

Nat: I never really encountered any problems until I hit my early 50s From there it has been down hill and steps on all three offset tractors.

Just maybe IH was right.

Don't know if you can see it in the picture or not but all it is is a heavy piece of angle iron bolted back on the large bolts of the bull gear housing with about a 8"x10" piece of diamond plate welded on it and a piece of 3/4" wide flatstock welded around 3 sides.
