I have a 1952 super M, the main drive gear and constant mesh gear both have broken teeth. The part numbers are 356676R1 and 48717D. The local IH dealer is unable to get these parts. I see that this site has the main drive gear for an M available, part number 52089DD. I am wondering if the gears from an M or 400 are interchangeable with a Super M?

Thank you.

Since the SM was geared quicker overall, I would doubt that teh M is teh same. I think you would need parts from a SM, SMTA, 400 or 450.

Why not poke around at various tractor salvage yards and see if you can pick up the right parts for your tractor, rather than pay HUGE $$$ for new parts that may or may not work, and have the hassle of returning them (if possible) when they're the wrong parts.

There were lots of Super Ms. You should be able to find the part somewhere.

What do you think would be a reasonable price for used parts. I've just talked to one yard so far, but they wanted $300 for the pair of gears. I don't think they would be worth over $100 a piece.

I have both gears that I removed from a SM when installing a 9 speed transmission. Thats been some time ago, from what I remember there in good shape. If interested I can take a look. Can tell you there rust free and stored in dry. If there in good shape $75 + shipping.

Near end of M production the input shaft was changed along with bearing cage, front bearing, bearing retainer ,seal and drive coupler and same parts used in SM. If complete shaft and bearing cage bearings seals are used from pre change M it will work in SM and vice versa. Never tried shaft interchange without changing assembly so can't say for sure they won't interchange. Constant mesh gear is same as M. Think I have SM input shaft and constant mesh gear used in good condition reasonable if interested.
