I put new points & condenser in the Mag. No fire, rechecked everything, no fire. Got an old condenser from someone & put in. Blue fire at points, had nice fire at the plugs. To my surprise it started right up. I'm going to take the condenser back to NAPA today & tell them its no good. I had two people tell me that a Mag. with weak fire would never start the tractor & gas foul your plugs, I believe them now. I figured if it had fire(which it did) it would start. Anyway, I'm just happy to be able to drive it again. Thanks for everyones sugestions.

Local NAPA dealer is good to deal with, took condernser back & will have another one tomorrow. Now some of these other places....I wouldn't be surprised if them won't take a return! Over the years I've learned who to trust even if not always the cheapest price. Plus I can take it back, if I had ordered through the mail or something then I've have to pay shipping cost. Good Luck to everyone else keeping their tractors tuned up.

I have rebuilt a bunch of the old square mags for the hit and miss engines and only replaced the condenser when the points were pitted. If the condenser is good, and the correct value, the points wear evenly with no pit on either contact. The new condensers seem to vary in the value of capacitance AND do not seem to last as long. I have found that many condensers that were replaced were actually good and sometimes better than the one put in. If the engine runs erratically I replace points first and check for good spark, I usually find it. If it just quits running at all I suspect the condenser. Also over time the charge and discharge of the magnetic field will reduce the magnetic flux of the magnets themselves and that reduces the secondary voltage, therefore the spark. If this happens points and condenser will not fix the problem. Symptom is a spark that is yellow and will not jump 1/2 inch gap. Might jump a plug gap in air but won't under compression in the engine. So, if you get a spark like that with good points and condenser and it still wont run right send the mag out for overhaul.

MLD, Them fellers who told ya a mag with a weak starting spark wouldnt start the tractor (at least very well) were right on. Its even more crucial with a Magneto ignition that a good and proper sized condensor be used or else the spark is extremelyyyyy yyy weak. The other critical component of a Mag ignition as far as the quality of the starting spark is a good strong impulse spring n trip assembly.

Don't be too surprised if the store won't take the condensor back, as many shops have a policy not to accept returns on electrical and ignition components. (Having stood on both sides of the parts counter, I can understand why.)

I would suspect that a large percentage of the condensers which are being supplied for replacement today are being produced in Mexico or China with little or no quality control. The last tune-up kit which I got from IH the other day was still labeled "Made in USA" so apparently they are still furnishing US made components. Cost was less than 11 dollars & included points, condenser, & cam lube. I don't know how people in China are getting along if the stuff they are getting is any where as lousy as what is being sent over here. I put the brakes on buying anything "Made in China".

It's quite simple: The Chinese aren't using the products that they make! After they get done working in the distributor cap factory for $1.50 a day, they get on their bikes and pedal back to a modest home that MIGHT have some light bulbs and a radio for electrical appliances...
