Since my M is not running due to no spark it's time to tuneup the mag. The local Case/IH dealer has one in stock, so nows the time. Since I've never messed with a mag any advise will be greatly appreciated. I do the webpage that's been posted a few time on rebuilding a mag, so that's some help

Many on this board do not agree, in my opinion though based on 60 years experience, the best way to repair a magneto is to sell it Mag Man and buy a distribitur set up from salvage yard.

I would check the magnetism in your magnets to make sure they are still strong. Pull the coil cover and touch them with a flatblade screwdriver.
Should attract that screwdriver with some effort.
This is what creates the spark when they pass by the coil. If you are installing new points, I would take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean them. Your old points, if they're not pitted they may just need to cleaned with a piece of 320 grit wet or dry and use the alcohol on them too. Hal

You may want to pick up a copy of "How to Restore Tractor Magnetos" by Neil Yerigan. I bought a copy to assist me with the Fairbanks-Morse on my Allis, and found it to be quite straightforward. It does get a little technical, but has diagrams and pictures along with the descriptions so that even a clutz like me can put things back the way they came apart.

Remove the 3 screws holding the complete rotor drive to the mag, and remove it as a unit. Don't take the 2 screws out the hold the cover over the gears, UNDER the distributor cap, or you'll be messing with timing marks. (Of course, cleaning up the gear, and putting new grease in there is a GREAT idea.)

Here's a link to the oficial IH Blue Ribbon Mag Service Manual:

Thanks for the response Bob. I know about messing with the timing gears under the cover the hard way. I do have the link that you posted and it's a good one.

Thanks again.
