need help figuring out what serial number may have been on a "M" that my brother is restoring. Tag is missing on frame. The serial number on motor is FBKM 148881 X1. Is there some publication that references motor numbers to serial numbers? The casting numbers seem to indicate it is a 1948. Thanks for any help.
The tractor belonged to our dad and he farmed many years with it. He bought it used. Thanks again.

Pick a number a few thousand higher than engine number and put it on plate. Number will most likely not be correct but no one can prove it is not. After all if number is in ball park what difference does it make.

Milton Brother found cast number on motor is 1-8-R and on case by belt pulley is 1-8-48.
Means it must be a 48 then

Den T., --- 1 / Dec. / 2006 ---

Motor "1-8-R" = Jan. 8, 1948
Chassis "1-8-48" = Jan. 8, 1948

The "1-8-R" is the most commonly used CAST DATE
on IH motors and chassis, where as the year (48)
is used from time to time - not often.

On your tractor (Jan. 8, 1948), this is when it was poured at the foundry, you would have to wait 8 to 10 weeks before it was assembled, making
your tractor coming off the assembling line
around the 15th of March, 1948.

Your father bought the "M" used, so the motor may have been a replace motor. Serial numbers
do not match chassis Serial numbers from 1943 and later tractors will not match (motor and chassis).

Thanks guys. I was afraid that with no chassis tag the only good guess would be with the casting numbers. Seems like i read somewhere that on some models they tried to keep engine and chassis numbers the same but not all of time. Some online stores offer the replacement serial number tag for sale. You have to supply the info to put on it and that's why I was trying to figure a way to come up with it. Will do some more research. Thanks for all your help.

Den T here's some actual serial # examples. Tractor Engine Model 114046X1 112716X1 1946 167415X1 161715X1 1948 148550X1 145150X1 1947 232719X1 222719X1 1950 243658X1 232658X1 1950 238818X1 228818X1 1950 274061X1B 262061X1B 1951 As you can see the trend is engine # lower than tractor. Even though IH states there was no attempt to match numbers from 49 or 50 on up the last 3 digits seem to match on M tractors. Have worked on trying to determine what one number is by the other on those tractors but haven't collected enough numbers to determine a system thats 100% yet. Notice 2 1950 10000 apart, 0ne 1950 11000, 1951 12000 apart. Would appreciate any numbers from 49 model M up anyone would like to send me. Thanks Dave

If the chassis serial number is gone, it's gone for good, unless you can find the original bill of sale for the tractor.

The number on the motor is most likely not the same as the tractor.
Probely a 1948 as the codes indicate.

Den, look at the left column of this page under Research & Info. Look under serial numbers then Farmall. Looks like yours is a 1947. Dave.
