Voltage regulator autopsy

This is an IH 240 6V pos ground. I just put on another new voltage regulator ($71). I don't doubt that something I did killed the first regulator, (it was installed 5 months ago). When I opened up this bad regulator (not to fix it but to find out how they work), I can't find anything magical inside. No solid state components. Just coils that look like they actuate magnetic fields to open or close the three switches. So what can go wrong with these things? An open winding? A short somewhere?

where does the voltage regulator ground wire groung to. wire come out of the loom. but cant see wher they go.

A short to ground of one of the terminals of the regulator will fry the regulator in an instant. Not sure which terminal(but I think it is the field terminal) or what happens to the regulator, but I know the regulator will be shot. The grease zerks on the touch control arms of my 140 are not far from the regulator. Several years ago, got the grease gun on the zerk and contacted one of the terminals. Spark and then no charging...new regulator required.

Rob, I agree with the other gents, when tightly wound coils and relay contacts and lil springs etc get exposed to vibration n moisture n humidity and temp changes and plain old farm dirt they can just go bonkers. It might not hurt to non abrasively clean/buff/polish/dry all the relay contact points n blow dry n clean her out. One thing that can mess them up in short order is if the tractor is started up with a genny thats not the same polarity as the battery is installed cuz the relays can really chatter n cant decide whether to _____ or light a cigarette.

AS IH2444 indicates, it is most often contacts that become pitted and transfer metal across the gap resulting in inacurate settings. Some times they become overheated and coil insulation breaks down. (the smoke comes out). Incorrect installation is the most deadly to them especially battery voltage to the field circuit on an "A" type generator system. Jimn

Open winding, short, burned contacts (usual problem), changed spring tension, etc....
