784 fuel tank repair

My pa-in-law's 784 sprung a nice size leak in the bottom left corner of the fuel tank. A screw and rubber washer has fixed it for now. Someone suggested gobbing JBWeld on top of the screw and washer - what's the probability of that working long term? What's involved in replacing the tank? It has an aftermarket cab that I assume will have to come off. Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Call a local rad shop and get a price on having thr tank boiled clean and a patch fully sodered on to the tank usually a brass sheet fully sodered to the tank. Had a tank on an old 1066 done 6/7 years ago and no leaks yet, tractor is used every day.

Good luck

If the tank is between the fenders as a 574 is, be sitting down when you get a price on a new one. The 574 is 810.00. If a hole has rusted through, you can bet theres several more ready to. When you can lay the tractor up for a few days, get the tank off, use one of the tank sealers, like POR 15 or Kreem, people have good results with them. In the spring I have to do mine on the 574, 810.00 - no way -

The screw and rubber washer might just last for a very long time. I think I would just leave it alone and keep an eye on it. JB Weld can be a very effective repair, but the area to be repaired needs to prepped. Completely free of dirt, grease, oil, rust, and paint, which means you also need to completely drain out all the fuel.

You'd want to put some sort of sealant on the screw threads and UNDER the washer to seal the leak. Gobbing stuff on top of the screw and washer will only serve to make it impossible to remove the screw at a later date.

JB Weld would fall off quickly due to vibration anyway. It's not meant for that kind of application. Some sort of gasket sealer like permatex would be a better choice if it's still leaking around the screw and washer.
