Let's talk about an electrical overhaul

My '46 H has been converted to 12 volts... and converted rather messily. Wires are just wired up, and aren't neat and orderly by any stretch of the thought. A key has replaced the starter button, and an aftermarket amp meter has replaced the original. The 12v battery just sits on a plate ready to fall off, and the alternator sticks out of the right side like a tumor. I'm going to redo the electrical system. That much is certain. I want to make it look stock. So, I need some opinions. I can either go back to the orginal 6v system, or it was recommended to me that I use a 12v system that uses stock looking parts.

Apparently there is such a thing as a 12v generator. And a 12v battery is now made that is the same size as an old 6v, so it will fit in the new battery box I am getting. That sounds like a good ticket. The power of 12v, with the stock look of a 6v. But what do you all think?
What about replacement wiring harnesses? Are they necessary? Do they look stock?

Also, I want the look of the original operator's starting system that used a simple button. However, I want to secure my tractor when I'm not there for the safety of my kids. Can a key lock be hidden somewhere? Or is there some other safety device that I can install that will ensure the tractor can't be started until I want it to be started?

See post below first. Forgot to say I will send you wiring diagram for 12 V generator system and will also send you a disconnect if you want it. I have several extra. Wiring is the fuin part of rebuilding . Contact me by email if you are interested.

As long as the kids don't see you, just put a piece of paper[thin strip] in the points when they are open. Easy to install & remove but will keep the engine from running.

Mike, its your tractor and only you can make the call. That being said, theres no reason why an H wont start at the original 6 volts if a good heavy battery and 00 gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables are used so why not keep her original and standard????

YES you can get an exact and same sized genny for 6 or 12 volts NO PROBLEM, either get a new or used or rebuilt (or even have old 6 volter upgraded to a 12) genny and a Voltage Regulator to match what voltage you choose, piece of cake.

You can still use the original 6 volt starter regardless what voltage you choose.

The light bulbs have to be 6 or 12 volt depending on what you choose.

If you go 12 volts you can EITHER use a 6 volt coil but add a series external voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor or else get a full true 12 votl rated coil, no ballast needed. Of course if you stay at 6 volt use a 6 volt coil. I see no reason to convert an H myself, why go the expense of making her look original when original itself is fine??? so pay your money and make your choices.

best wishes

John T

Mike,

If all you're after is to make the tractor LOOK stock, you can tuck that alternator up under the hood and nobody will be the wiser. I've heard that it's tight but it will fit.

Alternatively, you can get a Hitachi 14231 alternator. It sorta looks like an old Delco generator, tucks up under an H hood quite nicely, and again, nobody will be the wiser.

What I found that fit well into a stock H battery box was the Champion Group 25 12V battery. Used to get them at K-mart but they've since switched to DieHard now that they merged with Sears.

Rewiring an H or M is very simple. make your own wire harness for a few bucks. As far as security, Walmart and some parts stores sell a gadjet with a green knob on it that fits on the pos battery terminal (or I guess coud be on the neg also) that cuts the power to battery when green knob is removed. Sells for 3.95. you have to have the knob in p[lace for power. Have used it with sucess at shows

I've re-wired several tractors using the old wireing diagrams in the operators manual. Never had a problem, and my electical skill are verrry poor. Go to radioshack, buy the wires, and run them 1 at a time. DO get the propper colors needed. that way the book can still help you. I always get wires a few gauges thicker to avoid any flow problems. Also, buy some spital wrap and use as needed. Mike

Mike – You can get a 12 volt generator the same dimensions as the old 6 volt unit and bolt right on. Or if you have the old 6 volt generator it can be reworked to provide 12 volts. Just remember you'll also need a new 12 volt regulator to match the generator.

Replacement wiring harnesses are readily available – some look just like the original. The one’s I’ve seen from Agri-Services (www.wiringharnesses.com) are excellent but there’s other good ones out there. Or if you want to spend less, buy the appropriate (braided insulation) wire and tape and make your own harness.

As you note 12 volt batteries to fit in the old box are readily available.

As for “key switch” security with the OEM style pushbutton starter, you might install a key operated master cutoff switch (punch below) near to battery or starter. I’ve seen several on tractors at shows – they're unobtrustive and they work great.

The military has used master switches for years on their vehicles. At least the Army has, not sure about the Navy. We only tested one of their crash fire truck's, but I think it had a master switch too. J.C. Whitney has them too. Hal
