we've had a w450 for over 20 years i have not seen many of these around. iknow w6,w9,m are more popular is it that more of these were built? I believe ourw450 is a 1957.The engineers of that time were geniuses with the gas start and then switch over to diesel. How exactly does this work? never had it apart this tractor is virtually bullet proof. The snappy governor sounds good on a a square baler.I would like to hear if ther are more w450 owners out there

Gas start diesels??? When you switch to the starting mode, 4 things happen. Valves to the spark plug chambers in the head open. This exposes the spark plugs so ignition can occur and reduces the compression ratio to run on gas. The float in the carburator is released so gas can flow to the carb. In diesel mode, the float is locked up, shuting off the gas flow. The ignition is activated for running on gas. In diesel mode, the ignition is off. And finally, butterfly valves in the manifold direct air flow through the carbureator. In diesel mode, the carb is bypassed so no air flows through it. Sometimes some of this setup gets out of sync, or is bypassed for some reason. If all is working, the starting and switching to diesel is easy and can be done even in very cold weather.
